Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Join us to perform responsibilities as a senior accountant for the Financial Operations Group within the Office of the CFO. Provide general accounting, financial reporting, research, and analysis of accounting and financial reporting issues, and provides additional support to the Financial Reporting Team. This position reports to the General Ledger Manager.

Full cycle Accounting to include the following:

  • Provides financial information to management and stakeholders by researching and analyzing accounting data, preparing reports.
  • Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards for the accounting department.
  • Performs and prepares accurate and timely journal entries, general ledger posts, balance and reconciliations, entry adjustments, financial statements and closing the books.
  • Responsible for the month-end closing process and ensure the accurate and timely recording of accounting transactions.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness preparation and transmission of the Laboratory’s financial data to the Standard Accounting and Reporting System (STARS) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
  • Assistance with the monthly trial balance reconciliation between NREL and DOE at an accounting flexfield level, the uncosted balances reconciliation between NREL and DOE, and all other periodic reconciliations as required by the DOE or NREL management.
  • Reviews and conducts analysis, reports on discrepancies, and assists with the corrections of the NREL financial statements to ensure correct financial reporting to the DOE.
  • Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents.
  • Maintains financial security by following internal controls and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal accounting standards (SFFAS), applicable laws, regulations, DOE contractual requirements, and NREL and Alliance policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a high standard of customer service to stakeholders and internal customers.
  • Broad knowledge of specific principles, procedures, and practices related to supported fields and disciplines.

The successful candidate will be a continuous learner, think critically, take initiative, and have a commitment to quality and detail. We are looking for someone who can lead by example with a high standard of accounting and contribute towards process and reporting improvements for the OCFO. This role focuses on a fast-paced and highly diverse set of challenges daily - no two days are the same. This team is viewed as valuable business advisors to provide consultation across the lab, so we can continue to do our highly accountable and good work on researching renewables and energy efficiency technology.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience in accounting or similar field. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience in accounting or similar field. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience in accounting or similar field. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience in accounting or similar field.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • This position will require access to sensitive information, Government facilities, and/or Government information systems restricted to individuals with US citizenship. Only applicants that are US Citizens at the time of application will be considered.
  • Thorough working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Demonstrated experience with fully integrated ERP financial systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a variety of customers and management levels.
  • Detail oriented and proactive in issue identification and solution implementation.
  • Ability to work well with people across organizations and drive solutions through to conclusion.
  • Expert level data aggregation and spreadsheet skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Accuracy, timeliness and meeting critical deadlines is a must.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities concurrently and can work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Applies extensive technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards.
  • Considered internal subject matter expert.
  • Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures, and practices related to specific field.
  • Excellent leadership, project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use various computer software programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in accounting or equivalent relevant experience. 
  • Certified Public Accountant or CPA. 
  • Prior government contractor experience.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
