Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountain in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. 

NREL is seeking a project manager focused on the delivery and impact assessment of workforce development and clean energy technical assistance projects. NREL’s workforce development activities range from analysis and pipeline development to industry engagement and outreach. The focus of this role will be on executing programs and facilitating stakeholder engagement for domestic clean energy workforce and technical assistance programs. 

This position will work with the NREL team to support a variety of technology programs at the U.S. Department of Energy, including water power, wind, solar and buildings. The candidate will work collaboratively with other National Laboratories, industry, and university partners. The preferred candidate will have prior experience and understanding of clean energy workforce challenges and will have academic or practical knowledge of clean energy. 

The project manager will work with other analysts and senior staff to develop, implement and measure the impact of workforce and other projects that assess industry trends in order to inform decision makers, program implementers, and researchers. The candidate will also be involved in the development of technical or programmatic resources that help to build a strong workforce pipeline for clean energy jobs. 

The candidate will work collaboratively with clean energy stakeholders, industry partners, academia, and other entities. The successful candidate will perform project or task management functions including executing projects on time and within budget; establishing, managing, and providing direction to project team members; performing project work; and working with senior staff to identify strategic opportunities for project growth.

The successful candidate will: 

  • Have a strong understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. 
  • Support project delivery through task management, project planning, impact assessment, reporting, inter-team and external relations. 
  • Advise on methods to evaluate workforce development and other program effectiveness. 
  • Design surveys to collect metrics data on elements such as career development and job placement. 
  • Collect and analyze data to assess the impact of workforce programs and projects. 
  • Develop summary reports to project funders. Support the documentation of impacts from DOE-sponsored research and programs. 
  • Engage across a project portfolio to understand a work effort’s objectives and suggest improvements based on outcomes.
  • Have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. A high degree of professionalism, curiosity, and ethical conduct. 
  • Manage and serve as point of contact for external engagement with industry, academic and other project partners.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Full knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Very good interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Technical experience, education, practical experience or training in one or more of the following clean energy technologies: water power, wind, solar, buildings. 
  • Prior experience developing metrics, quantifying impacts, and developing project or program impact reporting, especially for U.S. government funded programs and for clean energy workforce issues. 
  • Expertise in demonstrating impact through qualitative data and case studies. 
  • Existing ability and/or aptitude to develop a clear understanding of domestic clean energy workforce needs to inform the development and execution of programs to address workforce challenges. 
  • Familiarity with working in cross-organizational, multi-disciplinary teams to execute projects or programs in coordination with diverse stakeholders, such as state or federal agencies, research entities, and program implementers. 
  • Involvement with managing tasks and projects and taking initiative especially when given limited direction. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team and independently with guidance from senior staff. 
  • Experience working directly with clients to identify needs and requirements for deliverables. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have prior experience and understanding of clean energy workforce challenges and will have academic or practical knowledge of clean energy. 
  • The preferred candidate will have an advanced degree or professional training in social science, policy, environmental studies, or related field.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
