Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, or Senior Lab Specialist, Division of Hematology & Oncology

The Chalfant Laboratory in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology in the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, or Senior Lab Specialist. Level will be determined based upon qualifications. The position will provide technical laboratory support by performing complex lab and research related tasks. Successful candidates will also develop, design, and conduct increasingly complex research projects. Successful candidates will act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They will have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. Successful candidates will perform daily activities without supervision. Successful candidates will also train other personnel on work processes and policies as well as supervise personnel and manage budgets. 

Candidates for the Senior Lab Specialist will be responsible for staff management as well as administration and coordination of the technical activities of the Chalfant research laboratory. Additionally, they will assist Principal Investigators associated with the Chalfant laboratory by performing the following tasks: designing research methodologies, managing research projects, developing and administering budgets and schedules, following established quality standards, and analyzing data and performance metrics. They will ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. Successful candidates may co-author publications and co-present results with Principal Investigators.

Specific duties for Lab Specialist/Lab Specialist Intermediate include:

  • Aid the Principal Investigators associated with the Chalfant laboratory to coordinate research projects, performing experimental procedures, collecting information and data, and preparing tissues and specimens for procedures.
  • Participate in formulating research methods, suggesting options for improving quality, and recommending solutions. Participate in computer database design, utilization, and research/data analyses, and suggest future improvements to data measurement.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of projects. Schedule and maintain records of equipment/facilities. May be responsible for operations of specialized labs or research areas within departments and/or field work and related data analyses for research projects. May assemble, test, calibrate, clean, or make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Train users in equipment operation and research techniques; and explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes.
  • Determine interview procedures and conduct interviews. Work independently on collection of data and analyze research results.
  • Confer with PIs in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
  • May supervise research support personnel and manage budgets.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Specific duties for Senior Lab Specialist include:

  • Assist faculty researchers in the Chalfant laboratory and act independently in the design of research projects, the development of methods and procedures, the preparation of research proposals, and the writing of research findings. Oversee day-to-day operations of projects.
  • Supervise Chalfant research activities and support personnel.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing the short- and long-range goals for the operation of the lab. Project future needs and formulate strategies consistent with projections.
  • May develop and implement lab policies and procedures. Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures. Coordinate with research staff on issues which impact lab functions.
  • May act as liaison to other departments, divisions or organizations.
  • Develop, design, and conduct one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan. Coordinate data collection and screening and verify the data. Review progress and evaluate results.
  • Develop protocols and criteria, determine interview procedures, and approve protocols.
  • Conduct analyses of data and interpret and implement research methodology based on outcomes of analyses.
  • Possibly co-author publications and co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings or conferences.
  • Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring and training for technical personnel. Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or other staff in lab techniques and procedures.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This position will report to Dr. Charles Chalfant, Professor of Medicine.

Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Anticipated hiring range for this level: $15/hour-$21.86/hour commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist Intermediate:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Anticipated hiring range for this level: $45,302-$58,836 commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum requirements for Senior Lab Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Anticipated hiring range for this level: $50,000-$67, 585 commensurate with education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with:

1. Advanced Microbiology Techniques (e.g., culturing, media production)

2. HPLC or UPLC

3. Mass spectrometric analysis

4. Advanced laboratory techniques such as bacterial and mammalian cultures

5. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as standard computer literacy

6. Leadership and supervisory ability

7. Enzymatic assays and enzyme kinetics

8. RT-PCR based assays

9. Animal handling (mice) and compliance

10. Tumor models

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
