Job Description

The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Legislative Affairs works to ensure the interests of DSS/HRA/DHS are represented with City Hall and sister agencies. The OIGLA works to ensure the passage of legislation that serves agency goals by coordinating the development of legislative proposals reflecting DSS priorities and initiatives. Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs staff analyzes local, state, and federal legislation for its impact on DSS-HRA-DHS and submits comments and recommendations on behalf of the agency to ensure its interests are represented in all legislative arenas and at every level of government.

The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Legislative Affairs is recruiting one (1) Community Associate to function as an Intergovernmental Affairs Support Associate.

Under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner for Intergovernmental & Legislative Affairs, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Intergovernmental Affairs Support Associate performs assigned tasks to support the Intergovernmental Affairs team, manage their clerical needs, and assist with community engagement activities.

The Intergovernmental Affairs Support Associate will:

  • Assist with the division's community affairs outreach strategy and activities, including developing and conducting proactive outreach strategy on the creation of new homeless shelters. Provides coverage on an as needed basis by filling in on behalf of other members of the team at community-based meetings and events in all boroughs, such as District Service Cabinets, Town Halls, Community Advisory Boards, and Community Board meetings, including during evening hours.
  • Coordinate logistics on behalf of the Intergovernmental Affairs team, including scheduling meetings, reserving space, managing team calendars, coordinating with external meeting attendees, ordering and assembling packages of materials, and preparing for town halls and other high-profile events.
  • Provide support to the Intergovernmental Affairs team, such as ordering supplies and materials; assisting with follow-up on inquiries, complaints, and correspondence; answering, togging, and directing calls from elected officials, constituents, city agencies, and others.
  • Expand community affairs outreach database with community contacts, and proactively researches and identifies new strategic community outreach opportunities with CBOs and other potential allies to support new and existing shelters with donation and volunteer opportunities. Organizes and assembles reports and preparatory statistics to facilitate strategic outreach which strengthens the program's image in the community.
  • Track activities of Teams' schedules, ensuring appointment information are consistent with requests for representation at events and meetings.
  • Address concerns and requests for information from the community, general public and elected officials, assuring prompt responses and follow-up. Including assisting in organizing meetings with elected

Qualification Requirements

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
