We invite you to apply for a Senior Lead Designer with our Creative Services team. In this role you will conceptualize designs and facilitate the creation of integrated design solutions that effectively communicate scientific, engineering, business, facilities, and operations information to audiences ranging from the general public to subject matter experts. You will work in a fast-paced environment leading a team of designers and external resources to inspire teamwork, maintain and build an engaging work environment, and continually educate staff on design principles and brand standards. Typical works include print collateral, websites, digital communications and assets, digital presentations, and environmental graphics.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a small team of in-house and/or contract designers, providing day-to-day operational direction and art direction to plan and execute creative visual solutions that align with Argonne’s brand and address clients’ needs.
  • Act as initial interface with clients to coordinate all phases of design including clarifying objectives, defining scope, negotiating deliverables, developing schedules, managing projects for accuracy and efficiency, responding to internal/external feedback, and driving progress to ensure goals and deadlines are met or exceeded.
  • Develop and execute first-of-a-kind design solutions for visual communications while simultaneously art directing design staff on multiple projects, working under deadlines, and leading team in high-pressure situations to successfully deliver with high creative standards.
  • Continually see and understand the big picture while making strategic connections and decisions to deliver Argonne branded work with maximum impact.
  • Parse, translate, and quickly process key aspects of complex, large-scale scientific, business, and operational concepts into visual solutions that achieve clients’ communication goals.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive working relationships across all channels and deliver excellent customer service.
  • Continually develop staff by identifying strengths and weaknesses and creatively seeking alternative solutions and approaches to challenges.

Position Requirements

  • Online portfolio demonstrating cross-channel campaigns (print, digital, environmental, and animated graphics) spanning brand development, communications, events, digital, PR, and social media with business-to-business, corporate/in-house agency/design firm focus.
  • Expert-level user of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft PowerPoint and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of and ability to employ current trends, principles, and professional standards for strategic branding, layout, typography, color, photography/illustration, production, and creative graphic design to support business, scientific, and organizational goals. 
  • Management of a creative team with varied backgrounds/experience and the ability to identify individual staff strengths and weaknesses and nurture their development.
  • Successful prioritization, management, and delivery of multiple project assignments while simultaneously providing: art direction to the team, leadership in high-pressure situations for positive outcomes, and a high level of customer service without creating an atmosphere of stress or anxiety.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to support collaboration and deliver persuasive presentations, working both through influence and control with cross-functional teams in order to achieve common goals and positive outcomes.
  • Knowledge of spelling and basic English grammar.

Bachelor’s degree + 6 years of experience, or a Master’s + 4 years of experience, or equivalent
