Job Introduction

BBC World Service is an international news provider, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services on digital, TV and radio. It reaches a weekly audience of around 364 million around the world, helping them make sense of the world we live in. 

BBC News Vietnamese brings quality, impartial, original journalism to Vietnamese speaking audiences around the world on digital. Its multimedia content, available on www.bbc.com/vietnamese and on social media platforms, reaches 1.4 million people on a weekly basis.

Main Responsibilities

  • Accountable for supervising the production of text, video and social content and innovative editorial projects to serve BBC News Vietnamese’s audiences.
  • Commissioning and selecting relevant material ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
  • To be an in-house authority on best practice production of digital and social content, particularly as it relates to the BBC News Vietnamese’s context, to test and report back on digital initiatives and stay abreast of trends and developments.
  • Actively seek ways to reach young and female audiences and introduce and implement strategies to improve engagement with them.
  • To lead a team of journalists in producing and reversioning impactful and accurate digital content relevant to the target audiences. 
  • Deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources.
  • To act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and distributing best practices between teams.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards. 
  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
  • To collaborate with graphic designers to produce creative and original graphics sequences.
  • Work with your Editor(s) to deliver the editorial strategy and increase impact for BBC News Vietnamese’s digital and social platforms.
  • Training and guiding team members on the production of digital and social content.
  • Commitment to the BBC’s goals of impact and reach and an ability to communicate them clearly to the team. 
  • Tracking data analytics across site and social platforms daily and at other regular reporting intervals in meeting BBC News Vietnamese’s digital targets. 
  • Use analytics to inform digital and social story choices and ensure the content is delivered in the right format(s). 
  • To find, verify and seek permission for BBC publication of UGC videos relevant to breaking news or emerging trends.
  • Ability to work flexibly including early/late shifts, weekends and public holidays.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Significant recent experience of journalism about Vietnam, Asia and global news and current affairs.
  • A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Vietnamese as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience of using it to shape the content and meet the needs of different audience groups. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Vietnam and Asia affairs and the ability to lead the production of impactful original digital content as well as the coverage of major breaking news.
  • Experience of commissioning, editing, structuring and writing sharp, engaging news and current affairs in a range of digital formats and generating ideas to reach wider audiences.
  • To be able to write quickly, clearly and engagingly and sub-edit or rework scripts in Vietnamese that can be used by all platforms.
  • A successful track record of working in a digital production environment with demonstrable experience in social media and interactivity.
  • A clear understanding of the needs and profile of the target audience and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling content solutions in text, video and social.
  • Excellent social media and digital literacy, including digital video production, audience engagement and optimization on and off site.
  • Familiarity with the BBC editorial policy and practice, and of the laws relating to journalism, including copyright.
  • Ability to identify potential stories through social media platforms and lead the production of engaging content for BBC News Vietnamese’s audiences. 
  • Demonstrable experience of working productively and collaboratively. Able to agree clear roles, responsibilities and goals for their team.
  • An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to our output.
