Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University invites applications for an assistant/associate tenure-track professor in communication and media studies. A primary role of this position will be in advancing student research activities. Accordingly, candidates are expected to have expertise in quantitative or mixed methods applied to pressing areas such as (but not limited to) political communication (including the politics of race and gender), health communication, social media, and communication technologies. We are particularly interested in candidates that can work collaboratively across disciplines and areas of our School and forge integrations with (for example) our Center for Cooperative Media, Center for Strategic Communication, News Lab, and Hawk+ streaming platform.

A critical aspect of this position is the development and implementation of initiatives that advance student-led research in topics of communication and media studies. Such initiatives may entail bolstering collaboration between students and faculty on research projects; supporting students’

participation in academic conferences; organizing student-centered symposia, poster sessions, and other scholarly events; and advising the School’s Lambda Pi Eta chapter.

Teaching assignments include CMST 301, Communication Research Methods as well as a range of courses in the Communication and Media Studies curriculum that pertain to one’s scholarly focus. This may include courses in race and ethnicity, gender, political communication, communication theory, health communication, and digital media technologies. Candidates should also be excited to build and teach new courses and conduct curricular, co-curricular, and research collaborations with academic areas across campus. Candidates should demonstrate a strong history of—or potential for—working collaboratively with students on research and engaging productively with external partners. Faculty members also have the opportunity to take advantage of a range of signature educational opportunities in the school, including academic centers, co-curricular student programs, and several prominent industry partnerships. Tenure-track faculty are expected to maintain a portfolio of scholarly work appropriate for a tenure appointment at an R2 institution. Faculty are also expected to conduct office hours; participate in area, School, and College meetings; provide University service as appropriate; and participate in the overall curricular and co-curricular life of the School and the University.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in communication, media, or other appropriately aligned discipline; a history of and/or clear promise for maintaining a strong record of research appropriate to an R2 institution; relevant teaching experience and demonstrated capacities for being an engaged and committed classroom instructor who will work with a diverse student population; a strong interest in building faculty/student research collaborations; and an ability to articulate a vision for student

scholarship in the communication and media discipline.

SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA:

Founded in 2012, the School of Communication and Media offers a range of dynamic programs in communication and media to a talented and diverse student population of approximately 1800 students. It maintains several critical strategic partnerships, including membership in NBCU Academy and the summer residency program for Ghetto Film School. The School houses award-winning student programs that include WMSC Radio, The Montclarion newspaper, Hawk Communications PR Agency, the Red Hawk Sports Network, Hawk+ OTT streaming platform, a newly launched Los Angeles residential program, and News Lab, as well as the Joetta Di Bella and Fred C. Sautter III Center for Strategic Communication and the Center for Cooperative Media, the latter of which serves the public by working to grow and strengthen local and collaborative journalism. Recent national recognitions for the School include an Edward R.
