Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Purpose:

The Network Administrator will perform moderately complex professional development and support of networking systems. Work areas are focused on systems support, systems configuration management and automation, and related programming. 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Design, configure, and maintain Juniper network switches and firewalls to meet the organization's requirements. 
  • Monitor and optimize network performance, addressing issues promptly to minimize downtime. 
  • Collaborate with other IT teams to integrate and troubleshoot Juniper solutions into the overall network architecture. 
  • Provide support for network-related issues, investigating and resolving problems in a timely manner. 
  • Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, diagrams, changes, and troubleshooting procedures, ensuring accurate representation of the network infrastructure. 
  • Assess future network needs and recommend enhancements to support organizational growth and participate in the planning and implementation of network expansion projects. 
  • Implement and manage security policies, access controls, and firewall rules on network devices. Stay informed about the latest security threats and industry best practices to proactively enhance network security.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Functional knowledge of version control systems, specifically Git
  • Ability to prioritize requests and deadlines
  • Ability to focus on continuous improvement to optimize network performance
  • Knowledge of system virtualization or container technologies: VMWare, KVM, LXC/Docker; ability to acquire new technology skills and use them to contribute to FRIB projects
  • Programming capability using at least one of the following; C, C++, Python
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Juniper Networks certification (e.g., JNCIA, JNCIS, JNCIP) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Dell networking hardware and SmartFabric services
  • Experience with NVIDIA Cumulus Linux Networking
  • Programming capability using at least one of: C, C++, Python
  • Experience with shell scripting, specifically BASH
  • Experience with system configuration management using Puppet, Ansible, etc.
