Laser Systems Consultant

The Opportunity:

What if you could use your scientific and engineering skills to inform advanced research projects in laser device and metamaterial designs for next-generation defense applications? As a Laser Systems scientist, you understand the challenges and opportunities in developing novel optical technologies of disruptive capability. That knowledge is key when it comes to assisting the DoD with strategic consulting on research and development (R&D) to deploy technology beyond laboratory settings.

On our team, you will have the opportunity to work with world-class scientists and engineers to shape national security investment through the development of cutting-edge technologies for military applications. You will leverage technical expertise to support senior DoD decision-makers with the strategic evaluation of new concepts and assessments of technological gaps. You will support our client’s mission by providing recommendations on the feasibility and potential impact of future research programs through preparing in-depth analyses, conducting background research, traveling to R&D facilities, and interfacing with the R&D community. You will work closely with government clients to track and evaluate the progress of sponsored research and communicate technical findings to a wide audience. This position is located in Arlington, VA.

You Have:

  • 3+ years of experience in optics and photonics R&D
  • 2+ years of experience with authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience in optics and photonics, lasers, optical materials, and coatings, or metamaterials
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with performing or supporting government-sponsored research activities
  • Experience with user communities in DoD and IC
  • Experience with metasurface-based optical systems, including MTF characterization and systems analysis
  • Experience with advanced nanofabrication techniques
  • Experience in metasurfaces integrated with photonic and solid-state devices
  • Experience with defense R&D
  • Knowledge of optical gain platforms, optical imaging, lidar and ladar, synthetic aperture radar, or electro-optic and infrared sensors
  • Possession of excellent organization and client service skills
  • Top Secret clearance
  • Doctorate degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $93,300.00 to $212,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen’s total compensation package for employees.
