Duke University has flagged the Chair, Department of Cell Biology job as unavailable. Let’s keep looking.

The job details are as follows:

What We Do

We build on the strength of our research and development expertise and a distinctive, entrepreneurial culture that encourages diversity, innovation, creativity, sustainability, and, simply, fun. Since inception, our mission has been to find a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension and other life-threatening diseases. Toward this goal we have successfully gained FDA approval for five medicines, we are always conducting new clinical trials, and we are working to create an unlimited supply of manufactured organs for transplantation.

We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC). Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through (a) the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and (b) technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. At the same time, we seek to provide our shareholders with superior financial performance and our communities with earth-sensitive energy utilization.

Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of “medicines for life”. We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and other orphan diseases.

How you’ll contribute

Conduct cell-based research to support the development of tissue-engineered lungs. This role will aid in identifying and maintaining critical cells for the generation of functional lung tissue.

  • Conduct insightful research into primary lung stem cell phenotypic stability and potency following isolation, expansion, and after seeding in bioscaffolds
  • Apply knowledge of relevant cell signaling pathways and microenvironmental cues from the niche to design and execute experiments to identify critical components for maintaining cell potency and functionality during expansion and recellularization. Optimize media formulations to drive specific cellular behaviors for expansion and recellularization
  • Investigate primary lung cell heterogeneity via gene- and protein-level analysis, both during culture in vitro and in bioscaffolds
  • Independently and collaboratively develop and use cell-based assays for evaluating primary lung cell function in vitro and in bioscaffolds
  • Perform bioanalytical assays to characterize cellular phenotypes (flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, Western Blot, qPCR, ELISA)
  • Participate in cross-team collaborations to support the characterization of critical primary lung cell types for successful engineering of lung tissue. This may include evaluating new technologies or methods and applying scientific judgement to the process
  • May support efforts to isolate cells from human lung tissue, as needed
  • Conduct independent literature review and propose well-designed experimental plans to address key scientific questions related to lung cell biology
  • Efficiently execute laboratory experiments following plans and protocols with good attention to detail and strong record-keeping
  • Analyze data and reach sound conclusions as supported by experimental findings
  • Identify novel or interesting trends and compile data into easily interpreted summary reports with key outcomes highlighted
  • Regularly prepare presentations and present and discuss data with laboratory staff, program leaders, and external partners
  • Contribute to the writing and/or review of scientific communications, inclusive of patents, publications, and regulatory filings
  • Demonstrate responsible and judicious use of inventory supplies, alerting lab management of inventory and supply needs in a timely manner
  • Perform all other duties as required

For this role you will need

  • 4+ years of experience with performing bioanalytical assays (flow cytometry, Florescent Microscopy, qPCR)
  • 4+ years of post-baccalaureate experience with primary cell culture
  • 1+ year of experience with data analysis software, such as FCS Express, FlowJo, Graphpad Prism, and/or FIJI
  • Ability to independently follow experimental methods and protocols
  • Proficient with laboratory instrumentation and data analysis software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Proficient with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work well and collaborate with others, both in immediate teams and cross functionally
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of co-workers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in cell/molecular biology, biomedical engineering, or biomedical sciences
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in cell/molecular biology, biomedical engineering, or biomedical sciences
  • 1+ years of relevant industry experience in the development of biologics (cells, or cell-derived products) for therapeutics
