Who we’re looking for

Toyota's Cloud and Developer Experience (DevEx) team's main objective is to reduce complexity and improve the development velocity and time to market of our software engineering teams that utilize Cloud computing. As a team, we are a passionate group of software engineers who take on the heavy lifting of non-differentiated, yet essential software engineering functions, thus reducing the cognitive load on our developers so that they can focus on building business features. To accomplish this, we build automated self-service solutions, blueprints, and golden paths for cloud-native applications and infrastructure, and deploy best-in-class tools, engineering standards, and best practices, as they pertain to Toyota's software development.

As a Sr. Staff Engineer, Blueprints in the Cloud Platforms team, you will leverage your experience developing large-scale, highly complex distributed applications on public cloud platforms (AWS/GCP) to create pre-configured golden path application and infrastructure scaffolding templates/blueprints for cloud-native applications. You will verify that the application blueprints incorporate AWS's well-architected framework best practices and include an automated, secure software supply chain to expedite business application deployments to production.

What you’ll be doing

  • Author RFCs (Request for Comments) to propose the implementation or modification of a new cloud blueprint or golden path.
  • Prepare technical design documents for a Cloud blueprint that takes into consideration the end-to-end lifecycle, including the inner and outer development loops. Ensure compliance with best practices outlined in the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
  • Write high-quality application and infrastructure scaffolding code for the above designs that adhere to our standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a large-scale web application environment.
  • Create application and golden path migration checklists and guides.
  • Provide forward-looking roadmaps, develop a strategy for the Blueprints track to meet the needs of the Toyota developer community, and provide tactical guidance as we continue to expand and establish the Cloud Engineering practice.
  • Keep abreast of emerging advances in cloud-native development by studying and researching public cloud features and technology developments and incorporating those that will increase the efficiency and quality of our development process.
  • Hire and mentor Cloud application engineers who represent the best and the brightest in the industry.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders (Application Product teams, DevEx Tools, Cloud Security, Site Reliability Engineering, etc.) to turn the Cloud Blueprints product vision into a tangible roadmap every quarter.
  • Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code/PR reviews.
  • Create and contribute to external blogs and the open-source community to represent Toyota and its values.

What you bring

  • At least 12+ years' experience in providing technical direction and leadership for software engineering and development, including at least 3+ years' experience developing, deploying, and scaling cloud-native software components on cloud providers such as AWS or Google Cloud.
  • Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems.
  • Proven aptitude in leading teams in iterative and incremental software delivery to create successful products.
  • You've worked with Python, Java, Spring Boot, Typescript, Docker/Kubernetes, Postgres, or any of the cloud-native database technologies.
  • Experience with at least one popular form of Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, or an equivalent)
  • Experience converting large monolithic systems into micro-service APIs (GraphQL/REST) that adhere to the 12-factor application methodology.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring, conflict resolution, as well as communication skills, not only within your team but within your product group and/or the whole engineering organization.
  • You've written distributed, high-volume services, and know how to use CI/CD tools to deploy and maintain them in production.
  • You have an implicit drive to improve You communicate clearly and empathically, especially in writing and documentation.

Added bonus if you have

  • Experience working on remote globally distributed high-performing teams and largely asynchronous work environments.
  • Prior experience in building large-scale distributed data-intensive applications in the Google Cloud Platform
  • Contributions to open-source projects.
  • Published blog posts and/or tech talks about your work.
  • Polyglot experience delivering software products utilizing a variety of technology stacks
  • Experience developing innovative tooling that enhanced productivity for cross-functional teams with a commitment to empowering colleagues.
