We have a great opportunity for someone to head our farm and equine insurance business. This managing director will be responsible for the P&L of a growing and profitable ~$60M portfolio of farm and agriculture products that focus on horses. This leadership role offers the chance to create the strategy and vision of the products, driving positive change and encouraging teamwork across the organization. They will manage a team of more than 45 associates who handle underwriting, marketing, sales and operational functions. This position reports to the Markel Personal Lines Executive Underwriting Officer and will be a member of the personal lines’ senior leadership team.

What you'll be doing:

  • Ownership of P&L for horse mortality and related farm P&C products
  • Responsible for overall performance of the products relative to established growth, profit and combined ratio targets
  • Develop and execute business strategy across the farm/equine product portfolio
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to determine technology strategy and prioritization for the product suite
  • Leads the development of products including rates, forms, and features/benefits through collaboration with your underwriting leaders, personal lines product management and pricing resources
  • Identifies new product opportunities and collaborates effectively from development through to implementation
  • Collaborate with claims, actuarial and your underwriting teams for results analysis
  • Determine the direction of sales/distribution for the products including channel strategy
  • Creates, manages, and measures the effectiveness of marketing budget
  • Strengthens an already strong consumer brand within the equine market
  • Provide executive leadership for the farm/equine underwriting, marketing, and operations teams
  • Promote enterprise culture, attract top talent and develop team members
  • Reports to senior management on key indicators, metrics and drivers that impact the achievement of business goals
  • Acts as a knowledge expert within the company on industry trends related to the product suite

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Requires 15+ years of insurance underwriting, product and/or leadership experience
  • Strong relationship building and collaboration skills
  • Excellent strategic skills with proven ability to think long term and lead change where required
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities
  • Experience working with and influencing key stakeholders and leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach, and mentor a diverse team of professionals to achieve high performance and deliver quality results.
