As the UK’s regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply.

To support our content transformation project, we’re looking for content designers who can use their skills and enthusiasm to create content that that will help us to improve consumer understanding of the energy sector and net zero.

What we are looking for

You will be a highly motivated Content Designer who will be an advocate for users working in our Digital Communications team to redesign the content on OFGEM.GOV.UK

The successful candidates will:

  • scope, create and improve user-centred content using content design principles
  • take a user first approach to content development and customer journeys 
  • convey complex information, writing simply and clearly, with the user in mind
  • deliver our key messages
  • publish content on our digital channels to agreed deadlines, using content design principles
  • provide specialist digital communications support to colleagues across the organisation to them understand what content design is, why it’s important and how to work with content designers

What you will be doing

You will take on a varied and challenging workload including:

  • providing content design expertise
  • developing, reviewing, writing, editing and publishing content that meets users’ needs based on insights and data
  • developing our narrative on protecting the interests of consumers and building a greener, fairer energy system
  • supporting communications initiatives with user focused content
  • influencing decisions, dealing with challenging situations and removing blockers to make sure content is user-centred, usable and accessible
  • delivering content transformation on OFGEM.GOV.UK

What we need from you

You will need to have:

  • content design experience
  • skills to deliver content that adheres to a content strategy in support of organisation business goals and user needs and style guides
  • ability to interpret complex language and convert it into clear understandable content
  • ability to challenge constructively, using data to make your point
  • analytical skills that can identify trends and create actionable insight

Job description

As a Content Designer you will get the chance to develop high quality content that helps to achieve our aims. The successful candidate will work with the Digital Communications team and colleagues across the organisation to transform our website content using content design principles, advocating for user-focused approach to content development. 

You will be: 

  • a skilled content editor with excellent attention to detail. You will know how to write simply and clearly, with the user in mind.
  • a content designer, working on high profile online content, making sure it supports other channels including social media.
  • responsible for the timely delivery and quality of content in support of campaigns and business objectives.
  • working collaboratively with communications colleagues to ensure digital channels are used to full potential.
  • providing content design support to colleagues across Ofgem, developing stakeholder relationships using evidence to explain decisions.
  • Contributing to content strategy and policies and developing content patterns and standards.

You will need to deliver your expertise with genuine enthusiasm and an attention to

detail that enables colleagues to better understand the diverse needs of our users and 

improve user experience on our website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, write, edit and publish content that meets Ofgem needs as well as those of our users using content management systems and production processes.
  • Support the timely delivery of content transformation, making sure that ofgem.gov.uk content is user-centred, aligns to business objectives and consistently meets publishing standards.
  • Use quantitative and qualitative data and work with colleagues to develop and use insight, interpreting research to better understand user needs and improve content.
  • understand the range of different users who might access content and services, and identify their needs based on evidence.
  • translate user stories into content that meets users’ needs, and propose suitable design approaches.
  • Evaluate user journeys and make sure they are the best they can be – identifying content gaps and overlaps.
  • Increase digital understanding across the organisation by acting as an advocate for the benefits of user centred content design by default and presenting to colleagues.

Key Outputs and Deliverables

  • Develop and deliver content using content design principles.
  • Using Agile methodologies, contribute to the delivery of content transformation on ofgem.gov.uk
  • Work with Head of Digital to deliver the Ofgem web content strategy.
  • Build relationships across Ofgem, to collaborate and problem-solve with colleagues to deliver tangible improvements to ofgem.gov.uk.
  • Use data, research and evidence to review and evaluate content development
  • Contribute to and use style guides and content patterns.

Essential Criteria

  • Ability to interpret complex content and convert into clear understandable messaging which helps users achieve their goals and supports wider communications. (LEAD)
  • Content design experience with proven ability to create online content that is accessible and user-centred. (LEAD)
  • Experience of delivering content that adheres to a content strategy in support of organisation business goals and user needs
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to work calmly even when faced with fast-paced, high-pressure situations.
  • Strong analytical skills, converting data to insight with the ability to report in various formats.
  • Ability to challenge constructively, using data to support your position, whilst being able to compromise where appropriate to create effective content which meets the interests of both internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working in government communications, or on GOV.UK, adhering to Government Digital Service (GDS) design principles.
  • Ability to persuade, mentor or train colleagues in content design.
