Attorney - Corporate Legal (Kansas City)

The Attorney will represent Burns & McDonnell interests and advise all global practices on engineering, construction and/or design-build contract and legal issues pertaining to current, future, and past services provided as a professional engineering consulting organization. The Attorney provides legal advice and counsel to project teams in furtherance of the Company's business (or the Company's affiliates that are managed by the Company), including transactional and operational matters, and will work with field personnel to manage legal issues.

  • Review and negotiate contracts dealing with engineering, construction, design-build, EPC and design.
  • Provide legal advice to various departments on a broad range of general business matters as they arise related to design and construction law, corporate, regulatory and business law.
  • Identify and analyze legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and assuring legal compliance.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal clients and legal team.
  • Manage outside counsel when retained for litigation or specialty matters.
  • Conduct internal training programs.
  • Advise executives and management regarding contractual obligations and interpret terms and conditions of all types and contracts involving engineering and other professional services, construction, design-build, EPC and design.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to various departments on a broad range of general business matters as they arise related to design and construction law, corporate, regulatory and business law.
  • Assume a leadership role in mentoring and developing other attorneys and legal team members.
  • Provide regular reports to General Counsel regarding client contract status, bid packages, risk analysis and corporate and legal compliance.
  • Participate in the risk management process.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • JD ABA Accredited Juris Doctor degree required.
  • Ability to become a member of Missouri bar.
  • Experience with law review or other journal writing activity is required.
  • Previous experience in the construction industry involving construction and engineering design professional law, including design-build, EPC, equipment procurement and joint ventures is preferred.
  • Must maintain a comprehensive knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws, regulations, rulings, interpretations and court decisions as they affect the company and industries served.
  • Demonstrated expertise in contract negotiations and dispute resolution.
  • Must be able to prioritize responsibilities to manage a large workload with very tight timelines.
  • Ability to work in teams and demonstrated leadership and organization skills as an accomplished mentor and team builder.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be detail- oriented, have a strong work ethic and professional.
