Summary

This job posting is for an experienced Motor Engineer supporting Oconee Nuclear Station, located in Seneca, South Carolina, within the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet at the Engineer III or Senior Engineer level. This position will be responsible for managing all aspects of the site motor program. 

  • Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
  • Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Hybrid Mobility Classification

Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility

Responsibilities

  • Serving as the site subject matter expert for large motor items & providing fleet assistance when required.
  • Monitoring and trending motor performance
  • Interfacing with offsite refurbishment vendors to ensure technical repair issues are properly resolved
  • Directing onsite testing and troubleshooting activities for emergent motor issues
  • Coordinating cross functionally with other departments (such as Design, Maintenance & Operations) to ensure motor concerns, schedules, budgeting, and related issues are properly addressed
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance is maintained for NRC and industry standards
  • Evaluates Fleet Operating Experience and industry learnings to improve component performance
  • Evaluating preventative maintenance (PM) program performance and recommending performance-based adjustments 
  • Additional engineering responsibilities may be assigned based on team needs and individual experience

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Minimum of four years of engineering experience (Engineer III)
  • Minimum of six years of engineering experience or five years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. (Senior Engineer) 


Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten years of utility engineering experience
  • Seven years’ experience in machine diagnosis and signature analysis with a minimum of two years engineering experience with large motors and rotating machinery
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Previous motor shop experience.
  • Proficient in mechanical engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Experience in the mechanical engineering areas, such as pumps, valves, chillers, compressors, heat exchangers, diesels, strainers.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. 
  • Proficient in principles of project management. 
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Specific Requirements

  • Nuclear Plant unescorted access
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays may be necessary to support nuclear regulatory compliance, unit outages, or emergent equipment issues.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

Specific Requirements

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications

  • 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
