Engineer – Power Engineering (Network Management)

Salary: circa £58k dependant on Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Transport for London (TfL) Engineering are looking for engineers to join the Power Team to help shape the future of the Power Network across TfL. On the Underground, DLR, Trams, TfL Rail and Crossrail (Elizabeth Line), the Power Team are involved in projects to maintain, renew, upgrade and extend the Power Systems.

A highly motivated and adaptable engineer, you will have experience in power system management and modelling of power distribution systems. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, being able to effectively present ideas to engineers and non-engineers alike. In your role as Engineer, you will work on diverse projects across the whole of TfL and be responsible for delivering engineering and technology solutions to provide power to railway systems.

This role involves being a trusted source of engineering advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders, and work will include:

  • Assists in the development and implementation of discrete engineering solutions
  • Provides support to TfL Operational Units to improve the reliability, availability and performance of the Transport Network.
  • Undertakes technical analysis, diagnosis and monitoring to support design, test, build, commissioning or ongoing performance, safety and reliability improvement of the transport system.
  • Manage, operate and-maintain the computer based (NEPLAN/ETAP) model of the power system, including system studies (e.g. load flow), reliability calculations, and fault level assessments.
  • Analyse asset information to assess plant and equipment for renewal and upgrading, preparing strategy, future operating plans and programmes of work within budgetary constraints.
  • Undertaking long & medium term capacity and security planning including effects of ONO network changes, and load growth.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable standards, design codes and legislation 
  • Evaluates, selects and applies appropriate solutions to well discrete, well defined engineering problems that improve efficiency or effectiveness, while improving safety and reducing operating costs.
  • Supports continuous improvement through the use of best practice, innovation, whole life cost optimisation and effective root cause analysis.
  • Support on-site measurements and results analysis.

Key Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential:

  • BEng/MEng Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar), or HNC/HND with extensive work experience
  • Power system modelling and studies experience (e.g Using NEPLAN, ERACs, ETAP) 
  • Power System Design experience throughout the project lifecycle
  • Knowledge and application of national and international power system standards
  • Experience of designing and implementing power projects in a safety focused industry

Desirable:

  • Significant experience of delivery and implementation of power system modelling in a railway environment
  • Knowledge of Operations and Maintenance requirements for power systems
  • Railway traction power systems design experience
  • Knowledge and assessment of distributed power generation connection
  • Experience delivering innovative solutions
