The University of Iowa (UI) Stead Family Children’s Hospital is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer. UI is a highly ranked Carnegie Research I University in the Big Ten, enrolling over 30,000 students, with a world-class health science center. The University is located in a community known for excellent quality of life and diversity. 

The Chief Administrative Officer of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a prominent leadership role responsible for the overall operational management, strategic planning and financial leadership of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital working in partnership with the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Physician-in-Chief and Surgeon-in-Chief and Department of Pediatrics Administrator.

The Position Summary

The Chief Administrative Officer functions as the chief operating executive of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital entity. The Chief Administrative Officer, working in partnership and collaboration with the Physician-in-Chief and Surgeon-in-Chief, provides oversight and direction to the planning, organization, and leadership of the daily operations of the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The Chief Administrative Officer will be expected to coordinate and work in tandem with UIHC functions in finance, strategic planning, human resources, information systems, legal services, quality management, public policy, strategic marketing and philanthropy.

Reporting Relationships

  • The Chief Administrative Officer will be selected by a team co-chaired by the Chair of Pediatrics and Physician and Chief of the Stead Family Children’s Hospital (Alex Bassuk) and the UIHC Chief Operating Officer, (Emily Blomberg)
  • The Chief Administrative Officer has a reporting relationship to the Chair of Pediatrics and Physician and Chief of the Stead Family Children’s Hospital (Alex Bassuk) and reports to the UIHC Chief Operating Officer, Emily Blomberg
  • The Chief Administrative Officer will have a strong working partnership with the Surgeon-in-Chief, Doug Storm, and Physician-in-Chief Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, as both these positions will participate in the hiring decision as well as for ongoing evaluation of performance of the Chief Administrative Officer.
  • The Chief Administrative Officer will also work closely with the Pediatric Director of Surgical Services/Surgeon-in-Chief, Doug Storm.

Key Working Relationships

  • Functioning as a key member of the senior management team, the Chief Administrative Officer will be responsible for supporting the goals and objectives of the entire University of Iowa Healthcare. The Chief Administrative Officer works in close collaboration and partnership within UIHC, as well as with the administrations of health sciences colleges and the University of Iowa, supporting UIHC while focusing on the success of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • The Chief Administrative Officer has close working relationships with the clinical department heads and directors of hospital patient care and support service departments.
  • The Chief Administrative Officer works collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and Patient Care Services for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to foster excellence in all aspects of patient care and family-centered services.
  • The Chief Administrative Officer works with the Chair and Departmental Executive Office of the Department of Pediatrics along with the Pediatrics Administrator to foster collaborative programs and physician recruitment.
  • The Chief Administrative Officer will work closely with the Surgeon-in-Chief, Anesthesiologist-in-Chief, and Nurse-in-chief of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and maintain a strong partnership with the Department of Pediatrics Administrator to provide high quality, efficient care across the perioperative plat form, pediatric Cath lab and other procedural areas. 

Selected Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop the yearly budget for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. This budget will be made in partnership with Chair of Pediatrics and Physician and Chief of the Stead Family Children’s Hospital (Alex Bassuk) and the UIHC Chief Operating Officer, Emily Blomberg, with final approval from the CEO, Brad Haws.
  • Lead efforts to continually improve quality, outcomes, and patient safety throughout UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Develop goals and key performance indicators to achieve targeted approvements.
  • Increase the visibility of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Coordinate the integration and monitoring of the overall budget for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • Ensure optimal revenue cycle productivity and provide guidance regarding coding, charge capture, and hospital billing.
  • Represent the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital as requested for contract negotiations with payers and other external agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation and inspections standards, all applicable hospital and university policies and procedures, and with The Joint Commission and other regulatory organizations.
  • Supervise the operations and administrative activities of the Center for Disabilities and Development.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Office of Special Events and Children’s Miracle Network.
  • Develop key external relationships as appropriate within the community and with political, legislative and regulatory bodies and provide representation for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to key community advocacy groups and city, county, state and national organizations.
  • Promote organizational identity and working relations among pediatric medical and surgical specialists and ancillary staff in all departments involved in the care of children.
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly reports of performance indicators for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • Represent UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in fundraising activities as appropriate, and as requested by the University of Iowa Center for Advancement.
  • Interpret UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and departmental policies, objectives and operating procedures to department heads and administrative staff.
  • Participate on UIHC planning committees, as requested.
  • Work with Carver College of Medicine Departments as requested for assistance in physician recruitment.
  • In collaboration with the Physician-in-Chief, Surgeon-in-Chief, the UIHC Senior Leadership team, determine the need for and priority of allocation of human, space, fiscal and material resources for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • Oversee capital management projects and capital equipment planning for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Goals & Objectives

  • The Chief Administrative Officer UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital will be expected to make substantial progress in the following areas:
  • Function effectively as a member of the senior leadership team to support the overall success of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • Establish personal and professional credibility as a leader within UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and throughout the UIHC. This will include establishing collaborative working relationships with the senior leadership within UIHC and Carver College of Medicine, and the faculty.
  • Promote a positive culture throughout UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and recruit and retain high quality staff.
  • Develop, lead and mentor leaders throughout Stead Family Childrens Hospital.
  • Be an advocate for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital within UIHC and the Carver College of Medicine. Build the appropriate relationships and partnerships to enable UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to leverage the advantages and resources that result from being part of a top tier comprehensive academic medical center.
  • Raise the visibility and recognition of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital as the leading children’s hospital in the state and in the region.
  • Gain recognition as an information resource and an advocate for the health and well-being of all children in Iowa.
  • Work with the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications for UI Health Care to promote the image and brand for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, both internally and externally.
  • In collaboration with the entire leadership team, foster the development of a regional network of pediatric healthcare by improving and extending relations with referring facilities and providers, ensuring seamless access, and providing high quality patient transport.
  • Play a prominent role in fundraising on behalf of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Build bridges within the pediatric community; promote and maintain the visibility of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Represent UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in fundraising opportunities, as appropriate.
  • Represent UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in negotiating and reviewing managed care contracts to ensure that pediatric specialty and subspecialty services are appropriately reimbursed.

Necessary qualities and qualifications include:

Education/Knowledge

  • A graduate degree or the equivalent in healthcare administration, business or a related discipline
  • Proven business and financial skills.
  • Reasonable knowledge of pediatric hospital accreditation standards.

Experience

  • Minimum of ten years of progressive management experience in healthcare operations.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in successful healthcare business/program development.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively and collaborating with nurses, physicians, ancillary personnel, and administrators.
  • Experience in the development and evaluation of clinical programs.
  • Experience in strategic development and deployment of strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and incorporating diversity in employment, programs, and patient care services.

Desired Qualities & Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic medical center or complex teaching hospital.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in pediatric hospital administration.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the delivery of high-quality pediatric care.
  • Effectiveness in assembling and leading teams.
  • Experience in marketing of pediatric services.
  • Experience in fundraising.
  • Experience with benchmarking and using data effectively for operational decision making.
  • Experience in human resource management, staff development and effective administrative leadership.
  • Experience in capital management, facilities management and hospital construction projects.
