JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Director, Perishables will report directly to the Vice President, GMM, Perishables and help to create a vision and strategy, as well as develop, analyze, implement, and drive merchandising strategies, to maximize sales growth and profitability in accordance with aggressive company goals. This director will have overall accountability for leading, shaping and executing the Company’s perishable strategy with a focus on fresh meat and deli. Responsibilities will include leading a team of merchandise professionals to create a best-in-class assortment of products that align with the company’s overall business strategy, exceed club members expectations, and drive membership growth/retention, margin, and revenue objectives.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Merchandising Vision and Strategy:

  • Create and drive omni-channel merchandising strategy and vision with an emphasis on capturing market share within the fresh meat, seafood, and deli categories.
  • Serve as a leader and change agent within the merchant team and the organization, fostering a top-line orientation and continual focus on new products and services to address member needs while growing market share.
  • Drive the process around the development of new innovative product assortments while balancing core assortment and a curated club selection.
  • Develop short-term and long-term strategies that connect to the Company’s financial plan. Partner with cross-functional leaders to optimize space allocation, visual presentation and inventory and supply chain management. Partner with the pricing team to offer club value and compelling price points, consistent with our strategy, while exploring opportunities for margin enhancement. Leverage a defined category review process and partner with key suppliers to drive productivity, value and profitability expansion. Define the role of ecommerce/omnichannel and partner with the digital team to pursue growth.

Assortment Development:

  • Oversee the aspects of merchandising, assortment planning, vendor selection, and identifying and executing trend opportunities. Analyze category performance and use industry trends to understand future market potential. Leverage consumer data to guide merchandising and pricing strategies as well as decision making across all channels of business.
  • Lead teams in the development of annual and seasonal merchandising strategies, drive the total business financial merchandising plans, and deliver strong brand and member relevant assortments. Partner with the field teams to support the execution of merchandising plans, visual merchandising presentation, and seasonal direction.
  • Establish goals and objectives for sales, profit & inventory for perishable categories and translating these goals into business plans, ensuring the team executes to their plans with a high degree of precision.
  • Expertly utilize data to drive conversion, engagement, basket size, and profitability in partnership with the Merchant Analytics team to identify category opportunities to formulate, execute and evaluate both short-term and long-term strategic plans.
  • Help forge deep partnerships with vendors, which are focused on driving greater value and return. Coach vendor performance using data to expand upon successes, advantageously address white space and mitigate issues.
  • Work closely with the operations team to understand impact of assortment on clubs and ability to execute. 

Team and Talent Management:

  • Provide career development, career laddering, performance management and goal setting. Mentor, train and develop the merchandising team. Provide challenging opportunities to leverage strengths and improve abilities. Create a strategic succession plan. Offer support, feedback and coaching to build future leaders.
  • Provide vision and change management strategies with the implementation of the new merchandising systems.
  • Develop a culture of innovation and thoughtful risk taking.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Must have 10-plus years of merchandising experience in a customer centric, SKU intensive multi-unit grocer or retailer at scale with an emphasis in the fresh meat and seafood business.
  • Ability to develop and communicate a clear vision for the merchant team; has a point-of-view and strategic agility.
  • Excellent management skills with a strong focus on leadership, team motivation, communication, and people development; comfort with ambiguity and guiding teams through change.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative and analytical thinking, intuition, and data to drive assortment evolution including exploring new lines of business and partnerships.
  • Travel required to various markets for club visits, competition and trade shows.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is starting from $175,000.00.
