The department of Computational Biology is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our cutting-edge Clinical Cancer Genomics team at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Job Description

This Lead or Sr Bioinformatics Research Scientist will analyze and classify somatic and germline genetic alterations in pediatric cancer patients ascertained from whole-genome, whole-exome and transcriptome sequencing and present findings to molecular pathologists for sign-out. This scientist will also work closely with our bioinformatics pipeline and visualization teams to maintain, upgrade, and explore novel analytical approaches to aid molecular classification and clinical reporting for cancer patients. Cancer Genomics is a rapidly evolving field, which enables new assays to be developed and implemented in our clinical environment. Therefore, the successful candidate will also have opportunities to participate in applied research and development projects to improve our clinical testing.

The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of cancer biology and expertise in genomic and transcriptomic data analysis using NGS approaches. In addition to data analyses, the incumbent will assist with establishing and documenting best practices and standard operating procedures for common NGS tests employed in our service. Clinical genomics testing at St Jude meets CAP/CLIA requirements for accreditation and reporting. Prior experience within in a clinical environment and experience in clinical test development and validation is also highly desirable.

Recognized as a world leader in mapping and characterizing the genomic landscape of pediatric cancer, St Jude has developed state-of-art computational infrastructure, well-established analytical pipelines, and deep genomic analysis expertise with a track record both research and clinical application of NGS data as reflected in publications in top-tier biomedical journals such as Nature, NEJM, JAMA, Nature Genetics and Cancer Discovery.

Lead Bioinformatic Research Scientist

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry) or related field.
  • Master's degree or PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant post-degree work in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry).
  • Experience Exception: Master's degree with 8+ years of relevant post-degree experience (OR) PhD with 5+ years of relevant post-degree experience.
  • Substantial experience in at least one programming or scripting language and at least one statistical package, with R preferred.

Senior Bioinformatic Research Scientist

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry) or related field.
  • Master's degree or PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of relevant post-degree work in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry).
  • Experience Exception: Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant post-degree experience (OR) PhD with 2+ years of relevant post-degree experience.
  • Significant experience in at least one programming or scripting language and at least one statistical package, with R preferred.
