This is what you will do:

The Global & US Market Research Lead at the Director level informs and influences Alexion – AstraZeneca Rare Disease global and US strategy and commercialization for multiple therapeutic areas by enabling high-quality, data driven, evidence-based decision making through primary market research, secondary research analysis, and insight generation. 

This a key role which integrates critical insights from global primary and secondary market research and data to deliver actionable recommendations and drive actionable decision making including both tactical and strategic decisions for both the US and global teams. 

The Lead works across functions (Commercial, Medical, R&D) to answer global and US business questions, generates key customer insights, influences lifecycle decision making, guides asset strategy, and drives insights for promotional and marketing content and resource development. This individual typically interacts with the Global, US, Europe (EU5), Japan, and International teams, so cross-cultural savvy is required.

You will be responsible for:

Responsibilities

  • Works with Therapeutic Area/Brand Leads at the global and US level to understand team priorities, goals and business needs. Independently designs project(s), including methodology and vendor selection, budgeting, and execution to provide answers and actionable information and knowledge to key stakeholders. Leads, and executes qualitative and quantitative primary market research projects to address key business questions related to commercial products and/or pipeline assets. Leads others to deliver on key projects, while functioning as the subject matter expert on research methodology, project approach, and deliverables required. 
  • Executes projects in a timely manner and within budget. Begins market research process by sourcing appropriate vendors, leading the RFP process, and negotiating to deliver the best work at appropriate cost to the organization. Maintains ongoing communication with vendors throughout the research process and keeps stakeholders informed on progress. Presents results and strategic insights, and responsible for analytics of primary and secondary data sets to extract country and region-specific insights to identify issues and trends to better inform decision-making and strategy development.
  • Demonstrates technical proficiency with a range of primary research methodologies and secondary research and data analyses techniques. Understands and triangulates primary market research with disease area literature, syndicated research, and other available data to identify inconsistencies and uncover customer focused, integrated, and deep insights.
  • Serves as the “voice of the customer” to the assigned Therapeutic Area/Brand Team(s) and translates "customer/stakeholder feedback & learning" into actionable recommendations. Connects, challenges, and collaborated with cross-functional teams regarding implications and relevant recommendations & actions based on those insights generated from primary and secondary research and other deep analyses. Presents, defends insights, and makes recommendations to executive management and senior leadership as required.
  • Acts as an internal knowledge expert and strategic business partner, working collaboratively with respective teams(s) as well as other cross-company and cross-functional partners. Ruthlessly prioritizes, manages complexity, thinks analytically, and allocates time effectively between multiple priorities or therapeutic areas, and across countries.
  • Responds to ad hoc requests for key commercial and business insights, delivering material in a succinct and effective manner to fulfill communication needs with internal and external stakeholders with diligent accuracy.
  • Innovates in market research and analysis using varied techniques and approaches to build enhanced value for cross-functional partners
  • Executes all work in an appropriate and compliant manner consistent with company market research policies, the values of the organization, working with internal teams to define and revise procedures and policies as needed. 

Required Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience conducting primary and secondary market research, in the biopharma industry with Physicians, Patients, Healthcare Professionals, Caregivers, etc. in multiple countries preferred.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking from strategy through to execution
  • Demonstrates high-scientific aptitude across multiple therapeutic areas, and the ability to integrate such thinking into business deliverables
  • Polished presenter capable of delivering content/results/findings at all levels of a global, matrixed organization
  • Ability to listen to and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, synthesizes data into an understandable narrative, and effectively communicates findings to stakeholders. Anticipates key questions and prepares answers in advance.
  • Resourceful in triangulation across primary research, secondary research and other sources.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology and analytics specific to market research.
  • Expertise using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in both US and Global roles.

Reporting & Presentations

  • Inform and recommend critical business actions reflective of the needs of customer, patient, & healthcare professionals
  • Includes multiple contexts and lenses to findings so as to drive utility.
  • Presents clear, concise summary reports or dashboards to senior regional leads and executive teams with recommended actions to drive business and includes a competitive lens.
  • Probes beyond the descriptive insights provided in top-line reports from primary market research to uncover the “what”, “so what”, and “now what”
  • Influences forecasting and strategic and/or tactical planning initiatives with commercial insights derived from triangulation of primary and secondary sources.

Partnering & Communication

  • Develops strong partnerships with cross-functional teams – commercial, medical, sales, business analytics, forecasting, competitive intelligence, commercial operations, R&D, and new products groups.
  • Ensures relevant team members are engaged at key stages of project to ensure that critical business questions are adequately addressed.
  • Serves as a resource and mentor to guide and/or challenge activities outside assigned scope of work, with strong prioritization.
  • Leverages partnerships with country and regional affiliates to identify best practices in market research and shares these across the organization.
  • Participates and contributes to corporate initiatives beyond assigned responsibilities.
  • Remains flexible as work responsibilities change based on business needs.

You will need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life science and/or business / marketing
  • 8+ years of experience in primary and secondary market research and analytics in healthcare, research /consulting firm, or pharmaceutical/biotech company
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral, are mandatory requirements; Excellent communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of time. In office at least 3 days a week.
  • Credible thinking and performance that earns the respect of R&D, Commercial, Medical, and Executive management teams.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects independently and modify methodologies as appropriate.
  • Adept at long term and short-term planning of market research projects, and ability to quickly shift as needs arise.
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. We would prefer for you to have:

  • Master’s degree in science and/or MBA/PhD degree – marketing, market research, statistics.
  • Experience with specialty and/or orphan/rare disease therapies.
  • Experience in a both a US and global role.
  • Fluency in other languages a plus.
  • Analytics and forecasting skills a plus.
  • Combination of pre-launch, launch and post-launch experiences.
