Forestry Supervisor (Urban Forestry)

Position Summary

Supervise, plan, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing park management, park maintenance and/or open space park facility maintenance activities; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Related education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. 

Bachelor's degree in agriculture, forestry, biology, wildlife, rangeland management or a related field and; 

Three (3) years of rangeland or forestry management experience to include; 

One (1) year direct supervisory or technical lead experience in an administrative capacity.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Possession of a valid Public Chemical Applicator’s License within six (6) months from date of hire.

Possession of a valid Arborist Certification within one (1) year from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

  • General forest and rangeland management techniques
  • Wildlife identification and wildlife suppression
  • Herbicide and pesticide application procedures
  • General Arboriculture pruning techniques
  • Plant and tree identities
  • Herbicide and pesticide application procedures
  • Operation and maintenance of heavy earth moving and forestry harvesting equipment
  • Tree harvesting and identification including plant physiology and pathology
  • Operations, services and activities of an open space facility maintenance program
  • Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of building and grounds maintenance
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Modern office procedures, computers, and software applications

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Supervise, organize and review the work of lower level staff
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
  • Oversee park facility maintenance and renovation procedures
  • Prepare cost estimates for needed maintenance and repairs
  • Interpret and explain union contracts, City policies and procedure
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work including City officials and the general public
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
