Job Description:

JOB DUTIES: Under direction and supervision of the Wildlife Diversity Program Manager, develop, implement, and promote watchable wildlife projects. This position focuses on increasing support for wildlife conservation and awareness of Nebraska’s native biological diversity by connecting people to the outdoors through various wildlife viewing opportunities and resources. This position will manage, lead, and assist with outreach programs across Nebraska designed to encourage and make constituents aware of the many wildlife-viewing opportunities in the state and efforts to conserve native biological diversity.

Work across divisions and with partner organizations to develop and sustain watchable wildlife programs and content. Collaborate with the Communications Division to share content on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s website and social media platforms which promote wildlife viewing opportunities and events, birding trails, resources, brochures, and more. Assist Parks Division managers, Wildlife Education staff, and communities in creating wildlife viewing opportunities, events, and designing displays and resources.

Oversee, maintain, and improve the Nebraska Birding Guide website, a guide to birding locations and opportunities across the state. Lead and coordinate the annual, statewide Nebraska Birding Bowl to engage with wildlife viewers and build awareness for bird conservation and resources. Promote the Wildlife Conservation Fund, facilitate communications with donors, and coordinate the annual newsletter, which highlights conservation efforts. Oversee the Watchable Wildlife Grant program and allocation of funds to awarded projects. Assist the Wildlife Diversity Program in carrying out the mission of the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project by working with biologists, community scientists, and master naturalists to implement the plan.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, fish or wildlife management or closely related field of biological science or equivalent experience. Prefer: one year related field experience. Valid driver's license required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: The ideal candidate for this position would have strong communication skills (both written and verbal) for a broad audience consisting of members of the public, local communities, landowners/ranchers, and agency staff. This position will be encouraged to develop new wildlife viewing opportunities to engage the public, so experience in outreach and the creation of programs or materials centered on educating the public about wildlife or a related field are ideal. Marketing and experience writing content for a general audience for webpages, printed brochures, newsletters, social media, email correspondence, or similar formats will ensure that these projects are successful. To best implement the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project through wildlife viewing, knowledge of Nebraska’s flora, fauna and wildlife habitat management principles, goals and objectives and associated recreation are preferred. The candidate must be an organized and self-motivated individual, comfortable working independently with little supervision and capable of organizing and leading teams for large projects or events. Working knowledge of ArcGIS StoryMaps, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are recommended.
