Therapeutic Recreation Services is looking for temp-seasonal 

Activities Assistant

to be a part of our winning team!

CLASS SUMMARY: 

Do you enjoy meeting and working with new people and various populations? Come be a part of Spokane Parks and Recreation, Therapeutic recreation services and help lead and plan activities for children and adults with disabilities in and around the Spokane area. Examples Of classes include leading a hike, facilitating a game of cornhole, supervising and leading a trip to the theater, teaching a cooking class, line dancing, and much more. This position would work 10-15 hours per week. 

SUPERVISION: 

Employee works under general supervision utilizing standard procedures. Follows established department procedures and refers unusual or unfamiliar situations to the supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF JOB FUNCTIONS

The following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Under general supervision, the employee would lead, facilitate, provide instruction, and/or supervision to participants with developmental disabilities in adaptive and inclusive recreation programs, classes and activities, and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Performs customer relations role, which may include interacting with patrons, participants, business or program partners, and/or city staff to provide information to
  • solve problems.
  • Participate in special events and creative planning.
  • Maintains attendance and progress records for class participants.
  • Keep accurate records, organize information, supplies and equipment, and follow established procedures.
  • Ability to correctly fill out timesheets and manage hours worked. 
  • Works as part of a team, attends training, orientation and/or staff meetings as needed.
  • Assist Therapeutic Recreation Services supervisor with daily staff scheduling/event needs.
  • Work with volunteers, care providers, parents and Para transit drivers and people in the community during activities. 
  • May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
  • Evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgments related to safety.
  • Listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
  • Potentially drive a 15-passenger van. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Must be at least 19 years of age. 
  • One year of relevant work experience, preferably experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Previous experience assisting, supervising, planning, or leading activities for persons with disabilities and educational, volunteer, or employment in therapeutic recreation, counseling, or special education preferred. 
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to pass a background check. 
  • Ability to pass a drug test. 
  • First Aid & CPR certification is required. 
  • Must have afternoon/evening and weekend availability.
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle and must possess a valid driver's license without restrictions. 
  • Ability to operate office equipment (copier, fax, computer, multi-line phone, etc.). 

Desired Qualifications

  • Maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Must have recreational leadership qualities and the ability to work well with people who are clients as well as co-workers.
  • Must be able to take charge and self-initiate. 
  • Must be willing to work with people who have developmental and physical disabilities in a recreational environment. 
  • Strong skills in sports, crafts, outdoor recreation, organization, leadership, etc.

EXAMINATION DETAILS

Local 270 is the sole bargaining agent for temp seasonal employees.

Temp seasonal employees receive paid sick leave in accordance with state sick leave legislation.
