Summary

The Chief of Staff to the CEO is a critically important role, enabling the CEO to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders and fulfill her commitments to Alnylam’s patients, shareholders, and Board of Directors. This role is highly strategic and facilitative and requires a combination of focus and flexibility, as well as a willingness to be an active facilitator in both delivering on CEO objectives and aligning priority projects. As the CEO’s trusted counsel, this role requires a highly resourceful individual with strong emotional intelligence, self-motivation, proven collaboration abilities and deep business acumen.

The Vice President, Chief of Staff will report to the Chief Corporate Development and Strategy Officer and is a key partner and advisor to the Chief Executive Officer on a variety of strategic, operational, and organizational matters. The role requires both big picture thinking, as well as an ability to manage complex details and drive actions across a variety of areas. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and highly organized individual with exceptional communication skills and judgment.

The Chief of Staff will become adept at compiling reports and presentations for the CEO and Board of Directors, in a succinct format, enabling the CEO to quickly understand where the business is and the issues it faces. The successful candidate will be expected to give opinions on such findings and given the task of designing and rolling out action/project plans.

Key Responsibilities

• As a participant in Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meetings, work closely with the CEO and other ELT members to implement strategic direction for the organization and ensure alignment with core CEO and Executive Team objectives.
• Develop and manage a process for measuring and reporting progress on high-priority initiatives and programs across the organization. Keep the CEO and other stakeholders informed on key accomplishments, issues, and next steps.
• Lead and/or manage special projects and high-profile initiatives, as appropriate.
• Act as a liaison between the CEO and other company senior executives, to ensure alignment and coordination on a wide variety of cross-functional initiatives.
• Support the CEO in defining and developing high-impact executive communications, including presentations for ELT and Board of Directors meetings, as well as All Company/Town Hall meetings and other internal and external audiences.
• Develop and manage agendas, send out pre meeting documentation and support key executive team meetings, including minutes, to ensure that important decisions and action items are fully addressed.
• Actively participate in meetings and track outcomes and deliverables, ensuring clear next steps are outlined for all individuals and teams.
• Work closely with the CEO to identify and prepare for critical thought leadership engagements.
• Be involved in and a key link for certain enterprise wide efforts within the Corporate Development and Strategy EA.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MBA, PhD, MD, JD, etc.) preferred with 10+ years’ experience working in or serving the life sciences industry required, which may include management/strategy consulting, private equity, medical practice or law experience, etc.
• 15+ years of progressive, relevant experience with demonstrated experience as a chief of staff, or organizing and directing multiple teams and departments. Including prior experience in a managerial capacity within commercial, research or operational divisions of a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company.

• Navigates organizational complexities, recommends solutions, and promotes collaboration across functions
• If employed in the U.S., being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is required
