Job Information

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applicants for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in the field of Civil Infrastructure Systems.

The successful candidate is expected to foster innovations in resilience and sustainability of civil infrastructure systems (including, among others, any constructed facilities). The candidate should have expertise to propel research to significantly enhance community resilience to climate-driven and human-induced hazards in the context of environmental, economic, and social aspects. Desirable research expertise includes assessing and minimizing the risks to US population centers due to growing migration to hazard prone areas coupled with the effects of climate change, sea level rise, and increasing intensity/rate of hazards, all within a context of growing socio-economic inequalities and infrastructure deterioration. Knowledge on dependencies/interdependencies within and across infrastructure sectors, life-cycle analysis, sustainable practices, asset management, big data and data analytics, public-private partnership, decision making, risk assessment, and risk management strategies is highly desirable.

A demonstrated potential or record of teaching and mentoring students in resilient, smart and recoverable infrastructure and in courses that complement the CEE undergraduate and graduate curricula, including the development of new enriching courses is expected. The successful candidate will exhibit the ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research and scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research. We particularly seek individuals pursuing innovative, world-class, quantitative research to encompass resilience modeling at the community and regional levels, uncertainties in recovery prediction, policy recommendations, and calibration of system-of-systems models of hazard impacts to inform more holistic decision-making and effective mitigation tools.

Applicants should preferably have B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. at the time of employment. Evidence of research/scholarship is required. Industrial experience is a plus. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the civil engineering curriculum, directing graduate students, working and collaborating with Preeminent Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteraCt) (https://interact.fiu.edu/ ) and establishing an externally funded research program in the area.

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply to Job Opening 523249 at facultycareers.fiu.edu and attach a single pdf file that includes cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research interests, teaching philosophy, and diversity, copies of a maximum of 3 representative research publications, and contact information for 3 (for assistant level applicants) and 5 (for associate/full level applicants) references. To receive full consideration, applications should be received by May 21, 2021. Review will continue until the positions are filled.
