Job Summary:

Our research centers on the mechanisms by which disrupted oxygen homeostasis in regulating fetal growth and maternal vascular adaptation to pregnancy. Using the natural laboratory of high altitude, our work takes advantage of naturally occurring variability between human populations in the frequency of hypoxia-associated vascular disorders of pregnancy to study genes and biologic pathways important for the development of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, two interrelated pregnancy complications that constitute a major cause of maternal and infant mortality worldwide. Our long-term goal is to identify potential therapeutic targets to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and to design more effective methods to detect individuals at risk for hypoxia-related disease.

Our lab seeks a full-time (1.0 FTE) Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in metabolism, metabolomics, and the application of these fields to human vascular disease. Experience with studies of vascular disorders of pregnancy is highly desirable. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

Research – 50%

  • Design and planning of research projects and literature review.
  • Utilize innovative laboratory techniques to evaluate the interaction of metabolism and uteroplacental perfusion.
  • Analyze and integrate large metabolomic data sets to extract testable biological hypotheses.
  • Apply these methods to advance our understanding of the molecular basis of hypoxia-related disorders of pregnancy.
  • Analyze and interpret research results.
  • Maintain effective communication with the PI, other team members, and local and international collaborators.

Communication – 40%

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  • Submit abstracts and present results at local and (inter)national conferences.
  • Present research in progress at lab meetings, project meetings, and one-to-one meetings with the PI.
  • Actively pursue fellowship awards and assist the PI in grant writing.

Mentoring and Collaboration – 5%

  • Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students in the group.
  • Actively pursue computational, experimental, and clinical collaborations.

Career development – 5%

  • Attend career development seminars and networking events.
  • Complete an Individualized Development Plan (IDP) to be discussed with the PI annually.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. 

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD in a relevant science discipline, such as human physiology, reproductive sciences, molecular biology, or related fields. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced understanding of pregnancy physiology and metabolism
  • Experience with handling large, metabolomic datasets. 
  • Experience with conduct of various molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA handling, JES/WES, ELISA, genotyping, RT-PCR, etc.)
  • Experience in statistical genetics methods, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), transcription-wide association studies (TWAS), disease risk prediction (polygenic risk scores), and functional characterization would be a bonus. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good communication skills corroborated by peer-reviewed first author publications, and oral presentations at (inter)national conferences.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$56,484 - $70,000
