The Program Coordinator will work in partnership with the Community and Leadership Development (CLD) department. Community and Leadership Development (CLD) provides resources and experiences that help residential and commuter students feel a sense of connection and belonging at the University of San Diego. Community and Leadership Development (CLD) is responsible for enhancing student success and programming within the context of the Thriving Student Model, as well as the coordination of tasks related to Commuter Student Life, Financial Literacy and Wellness, and Emerging Leaders. The core of the Community and Leadership Development work is to support students’ transitions, sense of belonging, financial wellness, and leadership development within the commuter student community. This includes providing significant support in the development and programming implementation, and on-boarding in the Commuter Student Commons and the academic Learning Communities.

The Program Coordinator will assist and facilitate the success of all new commuter students through the student onboarding experience and Living Learning Community (LLC) program. Coordinates all aspects of the Student Fall and Spring Onboarding experiences for commuter students. Implements collaborative programming initiatives within the LLC program; and when appropriate expands programming opportunities to all students, transfer, commuter and residential. The Program Coordinator will assist in the activities and coordination of financial wellness initiatives, leadership initiatives, including an opportunity to co-teach leadership courses in collaboration with the School of Leadership and Educational Sciences (SOLES). This includes providing support in the development and implementation of leadership initiatives and the Emerging Leaders and Commuter Assistant curriculum and instruction. Will support the recruitment, selection, and training of student leaders to support fall and spring orientation and academic year programming. Periodically, this position may be asked to contribute to the ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Commuter Student Onboarding, Community Building, Student Leader Recruitment, Selection, and Development:

  • Coordinate the commuter student onboarding experience during the pre-arrival period, Fall and Spring Orientation under the direction of the Director for Community & Leadership Development.
  • Work closely with the Director for Community & Leadership Development on the implementation of all logistics components of the Fall orientation weekend as it pertains to commuter students, including confirming the program schedule, delegating event responsibility, determining space allocations, and set-ups in collaboration with the Student Onboarding team.
  • Work closely with the Student Onboarding team to coordinate the Commuter Assistant role in onboarding new first year and transfer students during the pre-arrival period, OLE! Weekend, and Spring orientation.
  • Work collaboratively with New Student Onboarding, Residential Education, and Learning Communities staff to integrate the LLC program into the onboarding, and commuter experiences respectively.
  • Provide operational support of the Commuter Student Commons.
  • Train, develop, oversee, and direct the work of the Commuter Assistant(s) (CA) in all areas of their responsibilities. Meet one-on-one on a weekly basis. Provide regular feedback regarding areas of strength and growth. Identify areas for additional training and development
  • Lead weekly Commuter Assistant Leadership Seminar to ensure collaboration and consistency across the team.
  • Serve as co-instructor for an undergraduate three-unit, credit bearing course including oversight and development of syllabi, grading rubrics, etc.
  • Opportunity to serve as co-instructor in LEAD 150: Emerging Leaders in the Fall and/or Spring semester.
  • Serve on the Student Leader Recruitment & Selection Committee as a functional team member with responsibility for coordinating and implementing the recruitment and selection of key campus student leaders - Commuter Assistants, OLE! Team, Resident Assistants, Scholastic Assistants, and Transfer Scholastic Assistants.
  • Serve on the Student Leader Preparation & Development Committee as a core team member with responsibility for designing and implementing sessions to achieve common learning outcomes for key student leaders - Associated Student Government, Commuter Assistants, OLE! Team, Resident Assistants, Transfer Scholastic Assistants, and Scholastic Assistants.
  • Recruit, select, train, develop, and advise 5+ student leaders serving as Commuter Assistants and supervise student leaders/employees including designing and implementing annual and ongoing training and meeting regularly with student leaders/employees.

Financial Wellness Implementation:

  • Design, plan, and implement programming affiliated with financial wellness initiatives for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Partner with First-Generation Action Team, One Stop and Financial Aid team to integrate planning and programming with financial wellness initiatives.

Administrative:

  • Assist with programming budget maintenance, including assisting with direct reconciliation, tracking, and following through on all charges, purchases, and interdepartmental transfers.
  • Provide support as needed for ongoing programs, special events, and workshops, including creating marketing materials and website content for commuters, Emerging Leaders and financial wellness initiatives.
  • Remain informed, knowledgeable of, and follow current University policies and procedures.
  • Review best practices in the field of leadership development and stay current with higher education literature.
  • Direct the evaluation and assessment of the Commuter Assistants and Commuter Student Commons Program.
  • Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • Two years of work experience required; Master’s degree may substitute for one year of work experience. 
  • Two years of experience in implementing large scale programming required. 
  • Supervisory experience of undergraduate or graduate students is required.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends to attend programs and training is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience working with faculty and students in Higher Education preferred.
  • Experience working with commuter, transfer students or other underserved populations preferred.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience with a focus on developing new professionals and student leaders.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office (all applications) and G-Suite.
  • Ability to learn and use Banner, Workday, Salesforce, and MySanDiego Portal, USD My Postings, Cascade website maintenance, and Oracle.
  • Ability to advise students as necessary and refer them to the University resources as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and assess learning outcomes as well as program outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA standards; refrain from, and discourage the discussion of confidential information.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Ability to apply various organizational skills in order to prioritize workload effectively, satisfy deadlines under time pressure situations, and work on multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Ability to remain flexible and composed in a versatile work environment with evolving work situations.
  • Cooperate as a team member with all offices performing duties essential to the achievement of efficient delivery of education.
