The College of Sciences (COS) brings together the mathematical, physical and biological sciences in a research-intensive environment that simultaneously values excellence in teaching and a strong community engagement. The COS Research Office is the nucleus of research administration and support; providing a full suite of pre- and post-award services to enhance the research, teaching, administrative and outreach functions of the College. Essential Job Duties 

The successful candidate is expected to provide visionary leadership for research programs, empowering faculty to develop cutting-edge research as well as facilitating national and international partnerships with both the public and private sectors. This individual will work with faculty to develop, facilitate and obtain new revenue streams through grants and other resources that will enhance the College research programs and support strong graduate programs. Specific areas of emphasis include expanding interdisciplinary and translational research and associated graduate programs, facilitating a robust research infrastructure, developing the expertise necessary to support successful competition for federal research funding, and establishing a sound research administrative function.

As an Associate Dean, this individual will serve as a member of the College’s Leadership Team, setting policy and strategic direction for the College, and will represent and advocate for the College in various venues including university-wide committees and working groups focused on research. This individual will work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Director of Information Technology on management of research space, facilities and computing. The Associate Dean will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Finance and Business Management on post-award administration activities, cost-sharing commitments and F&A allocation. The Associate Dean for Research oversees the College Research Office, as well as centralized research-focused facilities.

The Associate Dean will be responsible for the College Research Centers and Institutes, including periodic reviews of their effectiveness. The Associate Dean will manage, in concert with the relevant University Offices, intellectual property, technology transfer and research agreements. Additionally, this individual will develop and manage research-related policies, serve as the campus liaison for interdisciplinary research, and organize initiatives to establish new research clusters, research centers, and interdisciplinary research. The Associate Dean for Research must maintain expertise regarding the federal strategic policy and funding environment and match the College faculty’s research talents to take advantage of future funding programs. The Associate Dean for Research is responsible for overseeing the College’s Research Office and its staff.

Other ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Dean Research will serve on college and university committees and perform duties as assigned by the Dean.

  • Facilitate all aspects of research activity in the college
  • Assist faculty in acquiring research support
  • Oversee compliance with university, state, and federal sponsor guidelines and policies
  • Oversee management of the college pre-award and post-award offices
  • Work with the Associate Deans for Research from other colleges to coordinate and expedite multi-disciplinary, multi-college proposals
  • Represent the college at university-level committees related to research
  • Advise the Dean on startup requests associated with faculty hiring
  • Negotiate cost-sharing and cash-matching agreements
  • Support new and existing efforts to increase the diversity of faculty, staff, and students in the college, working in coordination with the Associate Dean for College Success and Well-Being, the Assistant Dean for Culture, Talent and Human Resources, and other college personnel
  • Participate in the planning and hosting of the college New Faculty Orientation Workshop with ongoing support to faculty for successful career development
  • Oversee graduate programs including enrollment and assessment
  • Serve as a resource for faculty across the College on the development and approval of new courses and curricula including all necessary university paperwork
  • Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. and previously attained tenure or a scholarly record to support tenure at NC State University.
  • Outstanding record of accomplishment in research and graduate instruction.
  • Strong administrative experience.
  • Understanding of the land-grant university system with the ability to build partnerships inside and outside of the University.

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership at the local, regional and national levels in assisting with the development of quality research programs in Mathematics, Statistics, Biological Sciences, Physics and Chemistry and Marine, Earth, & Atmospheric Sciences.
  • Evidence of a successful program of scholarship and history of grant support.
  • Academic administration and leadership experience, including the ability to implement policies and decisions.
  • Evidence of mentoring junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and doctoral students.
  • Experience building interdisciplinary partnerships and research teams.
