Job Description Summary

As an expert credit professional, the Loan Review Senior Commercial Examiner serves as both a team leader and individual contributor within the scope of Examinations and continuous review testing activities across the Bank’s broad range of Commercial loan portfolios. The Senior Commercial Examiner independently conducts borrower file reviews, evaluates and responds to reviews completed by other Commercial Examiners, and provides leadership, in concert with the Examiner-In-Charge, relative to ongoing Examinations and continuous review testing activities.

  • Serves as Team Lead for examinations. Plans for resources, workload assignments and monitors examination work in process throughout the examination; conducts and participates in the examination. Reads, assesses, and provides feedback regarding reviews completed by other Commercial Examiners to ensure accuracy, consistency and quality of assessments and conclusions
  • Conducts independent, high quality, comprehensive reviews of borrowers across a diverse range of Commercial loan portfolios to assess underwriting adequacy, portfolio monitoring activities, documentation adequacy, collateral valuations, risk rating accuracy, and problem loan administration
  • Interprets and applies Regulatory feedback and requirements as well as Bank policies and credit standards and evaluates adherence of reviewed credits to these policies, credit standards, risk limits, and Regulatory guidance
  • Analyzes and interprets borrower specific information, including an independent assessment of repayment capacity, management capability, covenant adherence, legal documentation, and industry risk
  • Utilizes independent judgment and subject matter expertise to develop and provide management with a risk rating assessment for all borrowers reviewed, ultimately in support of the Bank’s Expected Loss determination
  • Participates in and contributes to risk rating discussions, both internally and with Line of Business partners.
  • Utilizes and applies subject matter expertise in development of job aids in support of Examination activites and other less-experienced Examiners
  • Interacts independently and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with lending and credit management staff in conjunction with loan reviews. Works productively to resolve any discrepancies and disputes with lending and credit management, incorporating Line of Business feedback in final assessments, where appropriate
  • Maintains an expert knowledge of Bank credit policies and procedures to measure appropriate adherence during loan reviews. Initiates professional development to stay well informed on credit products and structures, industry trends and regulatory changes
  • Produces workpapers documenting review findings for internal presentation to Loan Review management and external presentation to Line of Business partners and Regulatory review
  • Aids and assists in the professional development of other Commercial Examiners
  • Maintains confidentiality of customer information at all times
  • Performs other related duties as required

Job Requirements

  • Must be eligible for employment under regulatory standards applicable to the position.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field required. Strong preference for Finance or Accounting major or concentration, but actual work experience can offset a different degree type
  • Minimum of 10 years Commercial credit experience in loan review, credit underwriting/analysis, credit management, credit risk management, Commercial lending or Regulatory examinations
  • Expert knowledge of Commercial lending and credit analysis with extensive experience in corporate, syndicated and leveraged loans highly desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to independently compile data collected during reviews and interpret the data in narrative and analytical form to present the resulting review findings to senior business management
  • Must be able to present well-formed and supported opinions of process, procedure and credit risk condition to senior business management
  • Must be able to prioritize and organize assignments and meet strict deadlines
  • Excellent PC skills, including word processing and spreadsheets via Microsoft Office products as well as custom applications and systems
