This position will serve as an Overnight Camp Counselor at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6-14) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County.

Counselors will provide leadership and guidance for assigned groups of campers. This includes but is not limited to a cabin group, unit group, platoon group, class/activity groups, etc. Duties include developing and implementing lesson plans and activities, coaching and mentoring campers as they interact with others throughout the camp experience, including conflict resolution when needed. Counselors will provide supervision and ensure compliance with camp policies and procedures for campers assigned to their group(s) to ensure the program runs safely. Counselors, under the supervision of the Camp Director, Program Coordinator(s) and Program Assistants, plan and conduct activities for 4-H Camp Shankitunk campers. Counselors will assist with all camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned. Counselors will implement safety and health regulations and participate in staff meetings and training events as scheduled.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 17 years old to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations.
  • Experience and desire to work with children.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to teach, supervise and motivate youth.
  • Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with campers and other staff members.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Conflict Resolution desirable.
  • First Aid/CPR or Lifeguarding certification desirable.

Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Program Delivery – 70%

  • Lead educational activities that engage campers and provide opportunities for knowledge acquisition and skill development.
  • Teach and deliver the existing camp program as defined.
  • Teach innovative camp programs. Utilizing established materials serve as a subject matter resource in discipline; provide standard responses.
  • Interact with camp participants.
  • Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies.
  • Evaluate the camper's abilities and skills in program areas to ensure an appropriate program level and activities.

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Continuously evaluate program activities and consult with Program Coordinator(s) to adjust based on evaluation as needed.
  • Prepare written evaluation reports as directed.

Administrative Management – 10%

  • Supervise campers in your assigned group (e.g., cabin, platoon, class, etc.) to ensure safety.
  • Enforce camp rules with campers in your charge by consistently adhering to procedures.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities and daily routines.
  • Actively supervise the daily routines of wake-up, chores, meals, camper hygiene, rest, and bedtimes for sleep-away campers.
  • Actively supervise campers during program areas and all camp activities.
  • Recognize and respond to problems as they arise.
  • Supervise all safety procedures required for assigned activity.
  • Be alert and monitor campers' needs.
  • Discuss camper needs with Camp Director and parents, as appropriate.
  • Work with and support other counselors to ensure a cohesive camping environment that supports community-oriented camp culture and emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy.
  • Set a good example and role model by demonstrating respect, cleanliness, punctuality, cooperation, caring, sportsmanship, manners, and healthy habits.
  • Show enthusiasm and encourage campers to get involved in all camp activities.
  • Communicate regularly with other Program Assistants, Program Coordinators and Camp Director to identify areas of concern and possible solutions.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Instruct campers in your assigned group(s) on applicable emergency procedures.
  • Explain all safety procedures required for assigned group(s).
  • Take attendance for all assigned groups of campers and report any campers not accounted for immediately.
  • Explain camp and establish cabin rules with campers in your assigned group(s), ensuring compliance with established camp policies and safety.
  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, equipment, and facilities to the Facilities Coordinator and/or Camp Director.
  • Communicate with Health Coordinator to ensure appropriate knowledge transfer of applicable information from camper health records.
  • Document incidents and concerns as directed.
  • Make positive connections with campers and develop meaningful, respectful relationships.
  • Facilitate problem-solving through active listening, guidance, and conflict mediation.
  • Assist with camper personal and health problems, including facilitating additional resources when necessary.
  • Determine equipment and supply needs and submit them to Program Coordinator(s) and Program Assistant(s).
  • Prepare space, equipment, and materials for daily activities in a manner that optimizes camper motivation and learning.
  • Assist with weekly camper drop off and pick up; parking duties, health check-ins, or other duties as assigned.
  • Answer parent questions for camper drop-off and pick-up.
  • Complete reports and maintain accurate records as directed.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly program and cabin spaces.
  • Maintain program equipment in a safe condition.
  • Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment as directed.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that generally support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 2nd. The salary will range from $1,200 - $1,800. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. This is an on-site position, Sunday-Friday, with sleeping quarters provided in cabins with youth. Meals provided. Age 17+ required. Age 18+preferred (see position Overnight Camp Sr. Counselor to apply if 18+ years of age).
