Duties

As a Fish and Wildlife Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides technical assistance to cooperators to restore and enhance habitats of importance to listed threatened and endangered species.
  • Actively participates in all aspects of habitat restoration projects including conducting landowner contacts and feasibility determinations, planning and design, securing permits and funding, developing and submitting Wildlife Extension Agreements (WEAs), interacting with contractors, and providing construction oversight.
  • Develops annual and long-range goals, objectives, plans, and budgets for watersheds, focus areas, and ecosystem priorities within the assigned geographic area. Prepares annual work plans and program schedules to maximize efficient use of financial resources leading to accomplishment of approved goals and objectives.
  • Conducts fisheries and wildlife resources studies, accumulating and consolidating biological data into reports or recommendations on habitat restoration techniques.
  • Delivers presentations to other agencies, organizations, conservation districts, wildlife clubs, and community groups; works with print, radio, and television media to promote local Partners of Fish and Wildlife (PFW) initiatives; and serves on locally-led conservation boards and committees.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 04/05/2024 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

  1. Possess a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
  2. Possess a combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in the biological sciences (at least 24 semester hours) as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in the biological sciences, agriculture, or natural resources management or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Minimum Qualification [GS-09]

  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience may include 1) developing and maintaining effective working relationships and liaison with private landowners, tribes, other federal, state, and local agencies, and the public regarding habitat restoration; AND 2) assisting in developing or evaluating habitat protection or enhancement planning documents and biological reports; AND 3) participating in habitat or conservation and recovery for a wide variety of ecosystems. OR
  2. Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education.
  4. Minimum Qualification [GS-11]
  5. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) developing and maintaining effective working relationships and liaison with private landowners, tribes, other federal, state, and local agencies, and the public regarding habitat restoration; AND 2) developing or evaluating habitat protection or enhancement planning documents and biological reports; AND 3) coordinating efforts of multiple personnel involved in habitat or conservation and recovery for a wide variety of ecosystems; AND 4) formulating recommendations to avoid or minimize adverse effects on listed species; AND 5) preparing briefing statements, reports, correspondence, presentations, etc. NOTE: Your resume must provide sufficient detail proving you have this experience.
  6. Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree at an accredited college or university with a major area of study in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resource management, or a closely-related field which provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education.
  7. A combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education.

Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically,

Education

  • Skill in exercising tact, diplomacy, and assertiveness in official association with a myriad of agencies, organizations, groups, and private citizens.
  • Skill in communication, including the ability to meet, converse, and work effectively with supervisors, private landowners, coworkers, other agency employees, representatives of nongovernment organizations, and the public.
