The Husky Union Building at the University of Washington has an excellent opportunity for a Student Activities Graduate Internship within the Student Activities Office (SAO). The Husky Union Building (HUB) is a department within the Division of Student Life. The HUB supports the Husky experience with our mission to Enhance UW Community, Provide a Dynamic Event Center, and Foster Student Engagement. Leading with our core values of discovery, empowerment, equity, integrity, and service, our goal is that every UW community member feels welcome, cared about, and inspired to grow. As a graduate intern, you will play a role in contributing to this mission in a meaningful, fun, and memorable way, working alongside professional and classified staff in collaboration, and shared responsibility, to bring the HUB’s energy and culture to everyone who walks our halls.

The Student Activities Intern provides advice and guidance to student government, and registered student organization members and leaders regarding event and program planning, event fund procurement, interpretation of University policies, and training and leadership development for students with diverse academic, social, political, and cultural perspectives.

The Student Activities Intern may make all or a portion of this position a part of their academic requirements for practicum/internship with a graduate-level program in Higher Education, Higher Education Leadership, or Student Affairs Administration. Other degree programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis, so long as this internship can meet the academic program’s requirements. The Student Activities Office may also accommodate individual learning interests or projects, so long as they do not conflict with regular work expectations.

The Student Activities Internship is a 20-hour per week, 9-month position, $31.38 per hour

Professional Outcomes

The Student Activities Intern can expect to meet four learning outcomes from this experience:

Practical literacy and application of advising and working with diverse ideological and cultural populations

Experience with day-to-day business transactions at a large, urban, research University

Project/event advising and management

Working knowledge of student union/student activities as a profession, and how each unit contributes to HUB mission/University mission

Expectations

Be able to work independently, and part of a team.

Fully participate in office processes- attending staff meetings, retreats, etc.

Internship supervisors will set common framework for working/communicating with the Student Activities Intern.

Hold regular meetings with site supervisors, covering consistent topics regarding progress on developing skill sets/meeting targeted learning outcomes.

Provide any forms/paperwork necessary for site supervisors to complete for practicum or internship academic requirements.

Participate in University onboarding/training requirements, including DEI, SAFE Campus, Sexual Assault/relationship violence prevention, driver training for University fleet vehicles, hazing prevention, and reviewing governing documents for both UW-Seattle student governments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

50% - Help create and implement SAO training and development projects to facilitate student participation in co-curricular activities. Examples of projects include, but are not limited to: managing educational materials for registered student organizations (RSOs) for web publication on the SAO Resources page; working with our front desk staff to streamline social media calendars and content for postings/announcements on scheduled topics; conducting outreach and presentations to RSOs, campus departments, and other RSO advisers regarding RSO resources.

20% - Advise and assist specific RSOs in program development and implementation, including use of services and facilities.

15% - Learn about and provide support for:

  • Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) and Graduate and Professional Student Senate of the University of Washington (GPSS) programs and services.
  • University and state policies, procedures, and regulations, and other legal requirements as they relate to the expenditure of student government and SAO grant funds.
  • Maintaining public records in compliance with University records management.

10% - Monitor student organization programs in compliance with applicable state, University, Husky Union Building (HUB), and ASUW policies, rules, and regulations.

5% - Meet regularly with Internship Supervisors to check on University policy, learning outcome targets, and general supervision/coaching. Attend regular staff meetings for SAO and HUB staff.

Supervision

General supervision will be from the Assistant Directors of Student Activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Have completed a bachelor’s degree.

Enrolled full-time in a local graduate degree program in Higher Education, Higher Education Leadership, Student Development Administration. Other degree programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated interest in a career working in Student Activities or Student Development Administration, through undergraduate or graduate student co-curricular, academic, or work experiences.

Willingness to work with a variety of student populations.

Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Must be able to work on-site at the UW-Seattle campus.
