The Regional Vice President (RVP) Construction Field Underwriting for the East, Mid-Atlantic and North Central MLC regions reports to Head of MLC ( Middle Large Commercial) Construction and directs underwriting management and execution of the strategic and operating plans within their respective territory and provides management to 2 Managing Directors who oversee guaranteed cost, construction underwriters, and direct management of Loss Sensitive and Wrap Up field underwriters. The position is accountable for the profit and production of the Middle Market Construction business in their region including guaranteed cost, loss sensitive, wrap up, and excess construction P&L. Marketing and cross sell support for the Contractors Pollution and Professional Indemnity (CPPI) and construction related marine business is also important. This position collaborates with multiple Division and Regional Office leadership teams to direct a team of dedicated construction professionals to drive profitable business for The Hartford, acting as a liaison with field leadership to ensure clear communication and accountability. The position is charged with creating an environment that supports and motivates team members to develop expert technical, sales, underwriting and customer service skills with the goal of increasing the penetration of existing agency relationships and building new agency relationships within the aligned market.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The RVP Construction Field Underwriting is responsible for managing a team of underwriters, in addition to managing 2 Managing Directors who will assist in managing the territory and staff.

Sales/Territory Management:

  • Manages the profit and production of a book of construction business for Guaranteed Cost, Loss Sensitive, Wrap Up, and Excess Construction P&L.
  • Oversees Construction and MLC/HIG cross sell efforts for the following states: ME, VT, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, DE, MD, VA, District of Columbia, WV, NC, SC, PA, OH, KY, IN, and MI.
  • Responsible for risk selection and participation in referrals on Loss Sensitive, Wrap and larger more complex guaranteed cost accounts.
  • Builds strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key Construction agents, brokers and clients. Develops and implements segment sales plans. Maintains keen insight into competitor’s strengths, weaknesses and strategies to leverage for profitable business and increased agency penetration. 
  • Directs and manages team performance to ensure consistent practice of sales excellence discipline.
  • Actively manages the flow and mix of business to ensure that short-term and long-term financial outcomes are optimized.

People Leadership and Development

  • Responsible for attracting, selecting and developing high caliber diverse talent from within and/or outside of the organization. Ensures staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs. Effectively manages staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; builds a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involves them in critical decision making and planning activities.

Underwriting Operations

  • Partners with Construction Underwriting Officers to establish book vision, appetite and monitor pricing, book mix and production.
  • Ensures that underwriting practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to, specifically focusing upon pricing, risk selection, mix of business, flow management and quality analysis. Utilizes QA and referral programs to identify opportunities to develop staff to ensure functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance with segment guidelines.

Planning and Monitoring Results

  • Develops territorial strategic and operating plans, which leverage agent/broker relationships and positions The Hartford to profitably grow within the territory. Closely manages plan results and directs implementation of specific actions to address financial shortfalls. Responsible for collaborating with Division and Regional Office leadership for agency management of top partners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong Property & Casualty background and experience with Loss Sensitive, Guaranteed Cost and Wrap Up insurance programs
  • Advanced degree and/or relevant industry designation (e.g.) CRIS, CPCU, ARM OR CIC preferred
  • Experience and understanding of OCIPs, CCIPs, CPPI, Builders Risk, RRP and OCP required
  • 10+ years of underwriting Loss Sensitive and Guaranteed Cost territorial experience of which 5+ years in a leadership/management role.
  • Strong existing relationships with some or all regional agents and national brokers in Eastern region required
  • Solid financial/business acumen skills
  • Strong operational and execution excellence of The Hartford Way routines and behaviors
  • Active participation and awareness of Employee Resource Groups and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives
  • Ability to learn/navigate internal computer systems
  • Experience with Microsoft computer package
  • Highly regarded for leadership capabilities
  • Ability to travel extensively, 25-50%
  • Must be in office two to three days per week (depending on travel) Locations of offices includes (Boston, Hartford, Morristown, Clinton, NYC, King of Prussia, Cleveland, Hunt Valley, Alexandria, Charlotte)
  • Eligibility of Company Car depends on where position is based. Must be able to hit mileage requirement*

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$177,680-$266,520
