This role is integral to shaping the strategic vision for the corporate engineering department, providing vital support across all sterilization modalities, including Gamma Irradiation, Ethylene Oxide, Electron beam/X-ray, and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) processes.

The responsibilities include actively overseeing and providing technical leadership for capital expenditure projects and strategic planning initiatives. This encompasses hands-on involvement in facilities design, ensuring regulatory compliance, optimizing plant equipment and technologies, and spearheading the development and execution of facility maintenance programs. Throughout this journey, your pivotal role ensures the secure and successful completion of initiatives spanning a diverse global network of 48 facilities in 13 countries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Within this leadership capacity, the VP of Global Engineering will manage a team of six experienced direct reports, holding overall accountability for a global staff of ~40 professionals. This impactful role demands extensive domestic and international travel (up to 60%) to and from company offices and facilities.

Role and Responsibilities

This role will provide direct, hands-on leadership and oversight for a range of critical activities within the global network of 48 existing facilities, as well as future planned facilities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing and overseeing facility design, process/controls equipment installation, capital project management, and strategic maintenance initiatives.
  • Identifying, prioritizing, and executing capital projects – encompassing expansions, upgrades, modifications, and greenfield builds – with a focus on enhancing quality, safety, reliability, and capabilities while achieving substantial annual and lifetime savings through minimizing labor, energy, material waste, and shutdowns.
  • Establishing the strategy, vision, and metrics for the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program to maximize equipment reliability and operational excellence while minimizing the frequency of shutdowns.
  • Crafting and managing a comprehensive capital expenditure plan, including P&L responsibility for an annual budget of approximately $150M. Emphasis will be placed on accurate cost tracking and meticulous monitoring of work breakdown schedules to ensure timely completion, commissioning, and startup of facilities and plant equipment.
  • Developing policies, procedures, and metrics to facilitate the accurate collection, dissemination, and reporting of key performance indicators (KPIs), crucial for tracking progress towards strategic goals.
  • Influencing and ensuring the proper implementation of change management strategies to enhance start-to-finish execution of engineering, project management, and maintenance initiatives, aiming to reduce costs, improve quality, and gain efficiencies.
  • Ensuring that engineering and capital project/maintenance activities adhere to established EH&S standards, policies, and procedures, and remain compliant with relevant building codes, GMP best practices, and applicable regulations, including those mandated by the FDA & OSHA.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with counterparts in Operations, Sales, Quality, EH&S, Finance, IT, HR, Advisory Services, and Legal departments to ensure seamless operational, strategic, and business alignment.
  • Playing a pivotal role in the selection, training, development, mentoring, and motivation of your direct reports and engineering department staff. This includes crafting short-term and long-term development plans for high-potential team members and conducting regular assessments to track progress and performance.
  • Leading by example to foster a positive, inclusive-friendly corporate and departmental culture that exemplifies the values of safety, quality, customer focus, people, integrity, and excellence.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in a mechanical, chemical, facilities management, or related engineering field is required. An MBA degree is strongly preferred.
  • Over 20 years of hands-on experience in technical engineering, capital project management, and facilities maintenance, with a minimum of 10 years in a strategic leadership role at the senior management/director level.
  • Proven success in managing global capital improvement and maintenance projects, particularly related to expansions, modifications, and equipment upgrades within a significant portfolio of process facilities.
  • Demonstrated financial and business acumen, with prior P&L responsibility for developing and maintaining departmental and capital expenditure project budgets.
  • Technical expertise in managing the design, implementation, and maintenance of process and controls systems for large-scale process facilities. Material handling experience is a strong advantage.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental, health, and safety codes and regulations, including building codes, NFPA codes, and FDA regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, along with strong presentation abilities.
  • The ability to adeptly manage multiple competing challenges and deadlines while navigating various stakeholder priorities with patience and tact.
