AGRICULTURE MGR 1 (Lead Greenhouse Manager)

Department Purpose

Facilities consist of over 120 research greenhouses (not including divided sections), 6 lath houses, 3 screen houses, 8 growth chambers, 1 modular farm and related facilities totaling 190,698 square feet of managed space at five locations on the UC Davis Campus. These greenhouse complexes are Core, Orchard Park, Environmental Horticulture, Armstrong and West Campus.

Job Summary

The manager is responsible for issues relative to greenhouse personnel, security, budget, maintenance, space usage, contracts and lease agreements in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with additional oversight of College of Biological Sciences’ research greenhouses. The manager serves as the overall Safety Officer for the facilities and is responsible for pest management, environmental controls and developing/implementing policy in compliance with federal, state and university regulations. The manager is responsible for assessing client’s space rental and other charges at current recharge rates as established by the College and Greenhouse Advisory Committee (GAC). Facility policies are set by the College and GAC and implemented by the manager under the direction of the Associate Dean with input from the GAC.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to work in areas where pesticides are used.
  • Wear protective clothing & respirator while carrying & operating a 20-40 pound spray tank.
  • Operate hand tools & equipment. Capable of moving 25-50 pound bags to a 3-foot high shelf.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot sun, rain, & cold).
  • Occasionally work at heights over 12 feet.

  • Position requires a valid C driver’s license.

  • Possess current qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate or equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Minimum Education/Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in plant sciences, plant pathology, entomology, viticulture, pomology, nematology, agronomy, related subject, or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience growing greenhouse grown crops in a research environment, with knowledge of and experience with all aspects of greenhouse operations requirements, including but not limited, to heating, cooling, safety, pest management, irrigation and fertilizer application, identification of plant diseases.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of controlled environment systems, including management and supervision experience, skills to efficiently organize work, delegate work responsibilities to staff, allocate and track space, determine priorities and make decisions, effectively select, train, supervise, evaluate and discipline employees in a positive bias-free manner.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Broad knowledge of integrated pest control methods including chemical, biological, mechanical and organic methods, as well as ability to develop, implement and maintain an Integrative Pest Management (IPM) program.
  • Knowledge of proper function and control of equipment to optimize environmental conditions and recognize and correct deficiencies.
  • Communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) sufficient to effectively interact with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and the public at large.

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Experience writing and editing a variety of analytical reports, proposals, correspondence, procedures, agreements, and training documents.
  • Experience with office computers and ability to use database, spreadsheet, and word-processing software.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Ability to analyze and solve complex personnel, technical and financial problems.
