Department: Pediatrics, Section of Developmental Biology

Job Title: Bioinformatician (Open Rank)

Position #00819835 – Requisition #32556

Job Summary:

The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Developmental Biology, seeks an exceptional Bioinformatician. The Section is focused on understanding cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms of fetal and child development, using animal, cell, and organoid models. The Bioinformatician will support research in multiple laboratories in the Section using bioinformatics theory and methods in a variety of -omics areas, including, but not limited to, single-cell RNA sequencing, single-cell ATAC sequencing, bulk sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics. The Bioinformatician will utilize and customize standard NGS sequence tools to provide analysis support for the Developmental Biology section, will work to analyze data for publications and grants, and provide training support for Section members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The hired, talented Bioinformatician will employ and develop approaches to further the research of multiple laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics Section of Developmental Biology.
  • Analysis of high throughput sequencing data, including RNA-sequencing, chromatin binding, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, DNA sequencing (e.g., amplicon, whole exome, whole genome), and single-cell sequencing.
  • Use modern data science paradigms, such as tidyverse, to analyze and interpret data while ensuring the accuracy of the analysis.
  • Write (i.e., code) and optimize high-performance computing (HPC) pipelines (e.g., LSF scripts, nextflow processes) to enable large-scale data processing and integrate standard bioinformatic tools to process genomic data.
  • Write and apply customized scripts (e.g., shell, R, or python scripts) to support the aforementioned work.
  • Manage/maintain the raw and processed data, documentation of pipelines (internally and externally, e.g., GitHub), and access to these resources for multiple laboratories in the Section.
  • Assisted with research grant applications, contributed to manuscripts for publications, and participated in regular section meetings and scientific activities.
  • Additional responsibilities related to the position as assigned by supervisor.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 1 day per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Why Join Us:

The Section of Developmental Biology is a highly cohesive academic unit within the Department of Pediatrics. The Section of Developmental Biology is committed to research that improves child health with five main objectives:

  • Understand the genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms that guide normal development.
  • Determine how normal developmental processes are altered to result in developmental disease and disability.
  • Identify new diagnostic strategies and molecular and cellular therapies to treat childhood diseases.
  • Train the next generation of leaders in developmental and stem cell biology and pediatric disease research.
  • Serve as a hub for basic and translational child health research that spans the Anschutz Medical Campus research community.

To accomplish these objectives, the faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff who comprise the Section of Developmental Biology perform research using stem cell, organoid, and animal experimental models, including Drosophila, zebrafish, and mice. Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems such as the brain, heart, intestines, face, vascular, olfactory, reproductive, and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations, and the impact of maternal health on fetal development.
