Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Engineering Division has an opening for an Electrical Safety Officer to join their team. Reporting to the Engineering Division, but also assigned to the ALS Division and ALS-U project, this role involves implementing an effective Electrical Safety Program. The officer provides expertise in Electrical Safety, acting as a champion for safety. They ensure compliance with DOE Orders and regulations, recommending and implementing processes to monitor and prevent electrical exposures and equipment issues. Additionally, they advise on complex regulatory matters, construction, maintenance, and lab hazards to minimize risks. This role will play a crucial role in improving electrical safety approaches and ensuring safe work execution and equipment operation.

Responsibilities Include: At Level 3

  • Serve as a technical expert for electrical safety regarding low voltage distribution and end-user equipment within ALS-U.
  • Evaluate and provide recommendations for resolving electrical safety issues, collaborating with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for installations, equipment, and safe practices.
  • Collaborate with experts in accelerator, instrumentation, and power systems to ensure compliance with LBNL electrical safety standards.
  • Communicate with stakeholders regarding safety critical operations such as facility maintenance shutdowns and startups.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to represented and non-represented staff.
  • Assist in creating safety documentation, including configuration control lists, for ALS & ALS-U systems.
  • Maintain communication with the lab's Environment, Safety & Health Section to uphold safety standards for the ALS-U project.
  • Review and approve Electrical Safe Work Practices, ensuring compliance with Berkeley Lab requirements.
  • Consult with the AHJ for interpretations of Safe Work Practices.
  • Act as a resource for employees, managers, and the ALS-U Division Safety Coordinator regarding electrical safety concerns.
  • Contribute to a diverse workforce and uphold LBNL's principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.

Additional responsibilities at Level 4:

  • Serve as Lab-wide subject matter expert for electrical safety. 
  • Develop new and improve existing safety procedures and safety documentation. 

What is Required:

Electrical Safety Officer Level 3:

  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with a Master’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Expertise in determining and controlling hazards within a research environment.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, ANSI, and other relevant federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in electrical equipment maintenance, including Lockout/Tagout and NFPA 70E safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs, including conducting training, writing procedures, and performing audits and safety inspections.

Electrical Safety Officer Level 4:

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 6 years with a Master’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • Expert knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, ANSI, and other relevant federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • A strong background in electrical equipment maintenance, including expertise in Lockout/Tagout and NFPA 70E safe work practices.

Desired Qualifications:

Electrical Safety Officer Level 3:

  • A Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) and at least 5 years of experience, with a focus on power electronics and power supplies.
  • Prior experience with electrical equipment and systems, particularly in the context of particle accelerators.
  • Experience working within a DOE environment, especially on projects governed by 413.3b regulations.
  • Professional certification (CSP), registration, or equivalent.

Electrical Safety Officer Level 4:

  • A Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) and at least 8 years of experience, with a focus on power electronics and power supplies.

Salary:

The Electrical Safety Officer 3 position offers an annual salary ranging from $129,252.00 to $157,980.00, which fits within the overall salary range of $114,900.00 to $193,860.00. The final salary offered will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and alignment with the internal peer group.

The Electrical Safety Officer 4 position offers an annual salary ranging from $154,560.00 to $188,904.00, which fits within the overall salary range of $137,376.00 to $231,840.00. The final salary offered will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and alignment with the internal peer group.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
