Job Description

Summary

  • Teach with Purpose: Our teachers play a key role in bringing to life the academic and cultural visions of our schools. This includes daily lesson planning, intentional curriculum design, and regular data analysis to help all students learn and grow. Our teachers also implement Social Emotional Learning lessons and Restorative Practices to create a joyful, inclusive classroom community.
  • Support and Collaboration: Our teachers work closely with the school’s Leadership Team, including their Instructional Coach, to ensure students are learning and growing. This includes weekly meetings, and ongoing feedback so we can continue to grow in our instructional practices.

Position Overview

The Literacy Specialist will be responsible for driving the literacy mission of KIPP Valiant Community by developing teachers and programs that enable students to make at least 1.5 - 2.0 years of reading growth each academic year. The Literacy Specialist will manage and organize Guided Reading programs from grades TK-4. This includes overseeing the training and execution of formative assessments 3-4 times per year, and supporting teams in setting up guided reading routines and systems. The position also includes staying current with best practices for literacy instruction in order to lead weekly professional development for grade levels to support high quality guided reading instruction for all students. 

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Hold a B.A/B.S degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
  • Hold a valid teaching credential in English, or
  • Eligibility for a Provisional Internship Permit, or
  • Eligibility for a Short Term Staff Permit

Experience: 

  • Experience as an educator teaching students with similar demographics to our KIPP Public Schools Northern California student community
  • Experience successfully leading a team of adults (e.g. grade level or content team) in achieving grade level and school wide academic goals.
  • Expertise assessing reading levels using STEP and/or Fountas and Pinnell assessments
  • Masters in literacy instruction preferred.
  • CLAD or BCLAD Certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of traditionally underserved students

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Spoken proficiency in Spanish preferred.
  • A passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate formative reading testing for the school and support grade level teams in creating subsequent groups for Guided Reading and Intervention.
  • Lead Guided Reading Intervention Groups and serve as a model for strong guided reading instruction.
  • Design and lead bi-weekly Guided Reading Meetings with grades 5-8 to analyze formative data and implement best instructional practices that promote reading growth.
  • Provide timely and relevant feedback on Guided Reading lesson plans.
  • Observe Guided Reading lessons in order to coach prioritized teachers and formulate professional development sessions based on trends.
  • Serve as the school CELDT/ELPAC Coordinator; coordinate and facilitate CELDT/ELPAC assessments two times during the year.
  • Plan, manage, and execute school-wide Literacy Events.
  • Arrival, dismissal and lunch duties as determined by the leadership team.
  • Attend bi-weekly leadership team meetings and work collaboratively with other leadership team members to support and enact school wide priorities.
  • Support 2-3 grade levels in proactive school culture plans and help facilitate restorative circles as needed.
  • Other duties assigned.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate school and classroom settings. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: School and classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. In an emergency context (e.g., pandemic), work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer, and the expectation is that the individual will establish a productive, remote work environment (e.g., ability to stay connected through different technology means). Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.

Classification

This is a full-time, exempt position on a school year calendar cycle, located at our school sites.
