Plant Genotyping R&D Specialist - Ankeny, IA 

Plant Genotyping R&D Specialist II - Ankeny IA - 2nd Shift MULTIPLE POSITIONS!

The Ankeny, IA lab operates using a 3 shift model Monday -Friday. 1st shift 8am-5pm, 2nd shift 3pm-2am, 3rd shift 1am-10am. 

The successful candidate must have the ability to work off-shift hours. These roles are for 2nd shift but may have some flex on the specific hours based on site needs.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities of this role, Plant Genotyping R&D Specialist II are to:

  • Deliver daily/weekly plant genotyping targets;
  • Have primary or shared responsibility for specialized laboratory technology;
  • Accountable for cross-functional work in multiple platforms/process areas;
  • Solve challenges and optimizes workflows;
  • Validate methods using multiple data sources;
  • Use specialized scientific techniques to conduct experiments and process improvements;
  • Adhere to established protocols and techniques and operates and troubleshoots instrumentation;
  • Resolve challenges requiring original thinking and deductive reasoning of diverse procedures within specialized laboratory technology;
  • Prioritize and coordinate work within a large team and provides training to contingent workforce, maintaining detailed record keeping and required documentation;
  • Achieve commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and best practices;
  • Perform a variety of experiments with accuracy;
  • Take initiative in keeping current with developments in specialized area.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Strong digital acumen including proficiency with data analysis and visualization software;
  • Prior experience utilizing computerized workflow tracking system (such as automated laboratory system, warehouse inventory, shipping/receiving, pharmaceutical tracking, hospital/healthcare, food service or similar);
  • Experience with experimental set-up and execution;
  • High throughput laboratory automation experience;
  • Mechanical aptitude for operating and troubleshooting automation;
  • Prior experience meeting challenges, demonstrating initiative, and insisting on high-quality deliverables;
  • Clear and effective communicator;
  • Track record of working effectively problem-solving in a team environment;
  • Agility to re-prioritize and adapt to changing tasks and timelines while working with urgency and efficiency to meet business needs;
  • Ability to follow established process and safety protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or other life sciences field;
  • Two or more years of relevant experience (includes post-undergraduate work in academia or industry);
  • One or more years of experience in genotyping lab;
  • Experience with molecular biology and/or biochemistry;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute and validate scientific experiments/methods;
  • Prior experience analyzing and interpreting experimental results/data;
  • Track record of success communicating scientific data and lab-related issues to team members, partners, and key stakeholders;
  • Experience analyzing production key performance indicators and cost/benefit analyses;
  • Skilled in organizing and developing specialized reports to meet evolving business needs;
  • Prior experience with inventory maintenance;
  • Experience troubleshooting instrumentation and maintaining equipment;
  • Experience with TaqMan-based genotyping lab;
  • Prior experience in a supervisory, project lead or club officer position;
  • Two or more years of experience optimizing workflows through root cause analysis and/or 5S/Six Sigma methods.
