Overview:

The goal of the Michigan Women's Health Initiative (MiWHI) is to link pregnant and birthing individuals with unmet social health needs identified in health care settings to resources in their communities to address these needs. MiWHI is a partner in a statewide Health Equity Grant collaborative, which aims to address social health needs in patients across Michigan by linking healthcare and community partners to achieve equitable health outcomes for all. This collaborative operates with health equity as a core value across all processes and outcomes.

Role Summary:

MiWHI is seeking a highly driven, well-organized statistician. This position involves statistical tasks and data management associated with healthcare datasets, including clinically abstracted data from 70+ hospitals across the state of Michigan via the Obstetrics Initiative (OBI), survey data, and claims data from both private and public payers. The ideal candidate will work independently and efficiently. The candidate must understand quality improvement and research complexities and can readily apply problem-solving techniques. You will have access to peers and mentors who can help support career growth and provide guidance when encountering analytic challenges. This role reports to a lead/staff specialist.

Responsibilities*

Reporting 

  • Design and prepare various analytic reports and dashboards to internal team, hospitals, study sponsors, and collaborating programs.
  • Collaborate efficiently with administrative, analytic and clinical teams to summarize, interpret, and present results in written and visual formats.
  • Respond to questions, data needs, and ad-hoc analytic requests from internal team
  • Create automated messages, tables, figures and reports.
  • Design analysis and communicate results with various audiences.

Data Management

  • Contribute to team dialogue about opportunities to merge existing and novel datasets and thereby create health IT infrastructure that more effectively promotes health equity.
  • Build analytical cohorts from large and complex datasets.
  • Actively contribute as an intellectual partner to team discussions about cohort creation, variable definitions, programming, analytic approaches, and opportunities to improve data collection.

Statistical Analysis

  • Design analyses and communicate results with various audiences.
  • Support PIs and others in development of specific analytic plans.
  • Work with collaborators to define scientific questions, formulate models and methods, apply appropriate statistical methods, and advise on presentation of results.
  • Independently conduct appropriate data analyses.
  • Document technical procedures for future reference and make recommendations for data analysis process improvements.
  • Support the development and publication of academic research papers, including independently drafting Methods and Results sections.

Required Qualifications*

Senior Required Qualifications

  • Three years of professional experience in data analysis (R preferable, Python, SAS and Stata are acceptable)
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatics, Public Health or related field
  • Experience with real world healthcare claims data, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, MarketScan, Optum, Medicaid and/or Electronic Medical Record databases
  • Strong programming skills
  • Experience in manipulating and analyzing projects using large administrative data
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on competing priorities with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be consistently detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Intermediate Required Qualifications

  • At least one year of professional experience in data analysis (R preferable, SAS and Stata are acceptable)
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatics, Public Health or related field
  • Strong statistical background, especially in modeling correlated data
  • Strong programming skills
  • Experience in manipulating and analyzing projects using large administrative data
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on competing priorities with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be consistently detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Additional Information

The MiWHI team is a remote-first workforce; however, certain meetings are mandatory and will require the employee to be present in person. Reasonable notice of in-person meetings will be given. Remote work is supported and expected as appropriate within one's role. This is a term limited grant funded position.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
