The Principal Engineer in Data Analytics at Costco holds a pivotal leadership role, steering the strategic vision, design, and architecture of the organization's data analytics and reporting landscape. In this capacity, this role will be instrumental in shaping the long-term technical strategy, embracing innovation, and providing hands-on experience as a technical leader for the team; conducting research for emerging industry trends and providing ongoing guidance to bring that to fruition. This role demands a dynamic approach, blending direct technical guidance, mentorship, and active participation in risk and growth management. Collaboration with the Data Analytics leadership team is integral, fostering a hands-on and collective effort towards achieving organizational goals.

ROLE

  • Leads and mentors a team of engineers, provides technical guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
  • Adheres to and drives modern software engineering practices through design reviews.
  • Works on system design through well-defined interfaces across multiple components, code reviews, leveraging data/telemetry to make decisions.
  • Develops “best-in-class” engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable.
  • Improves test coverage for services; organizes and implements integration tests; and resolves problem areas.
  • Ensures testability, portability/monitoring, reliability, and maintainability; and understands when code is ready to be shared and delivered.
  • Focuses on business needs through a data driven approach.
  • Troubleshoots and optimizes automation, reliability, and monitoring for delivered products.
  • Sets the strategic vision for data analytics and reporting, aligning with organizational goals. Provides leadership in guiding the overall direction of data analytics technical initiatives.
  • Designs, develops, and optimizes complex data models and reporting structures.
  • Leads the design and implementation of scalable and efficient data analytics and reporting architectures.
  • Ensures the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions by partnering with platforms, data architecture, and governance teams.
  • Defines and implements the long-term technical strategy for data analytics, incorporating innovations and industry trends.
  • Stays up-to-date with emerging technologies and assess their applicability to the organization.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platforms engineers, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions.
  • Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and skill development. Leads technical leadership forums, lunch and learn sessions for the rest of the engineering community in the organization.
  • Establishes and enforces data quality standards and best practices. Implements processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy.
  • Evaluates and selects appropriate data analytics and reporting tools to meet the needs of business. Leads requirement sessions and partners closely with platforms and infrastructure teams during the evaluation and implementation of these tools.
  • Partners with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for data analytics processes, reporting structures, and data models.
  • Monitors the performance of data analytics and reporting systems; and provides technical leadership to drive stability and scalability of data products and reporting solutions.
  • Implements measures to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Provides strategic insights and recommendations based on data analytics to support decision-making at the organizational level.
  • Recommends infrastructure upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements.
  • Uses Azure services, such as Azure SQL DW (Synapse), ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Cosmos, Databricks, Delta-Lake to improve and speed up delivery of our data products and services.
  • Implements big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization.

REQUIRED

  • Proven track record with at least 15+ years’ of hands-on experience in data analytics and reporting roles.
  • 5+ years’ experience in leadership or senior roles; demonstrating the ability to guide and lead a team effectively.
  • 5+ years’ experience working with Cloud technologies, such as ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Cosmos DB, DBT, and other big data technologies.
  • Demonstrated advanced proficiency in data analytics tools, languages, ML, and frameworks (e.g., Conos, PowerBI, SQL, Python, R).
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI or similar tools to communicate insights effectively.
  • Proven expertise in working with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, to architect and implement scalable and efficient data analytics solutions.
  • In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for robust and scalable data management.
  • Advanced SQL skills. Solid understanding of relational databases and business data ability to write complex SQL queries against a variety of data sources.
  • Experience dealing with high-volume and high-velocity data streams, and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near-real-time analytics.
  • Experience in shaping the strategic vision for data analytics and reporting initiatives within an organization.
  • Successful management of data analytics projects, including planning, execution, and delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership and responsibility of critical issues and conclude them to resolution.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Recommended 

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data science or related technical discipline.
  • Relevant industry certifications are a plus.
  • Experience in retail, manufacturing, ecommerce, supply chain.

Pay Range: $160,000 - $230,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit Eligible
