About the role

The Associate Director - Solution Architect is accountable for determining and architecting solutions that enable business capabilities, delivering in alignment with AstraZeneca’s IT strategy, roadmap, principles and standards. They work with other Architects in the Manufacturing domain and experience in this domain is essential.

The Associate Director Solution Architect ensures that AZ technical solutions are delivered to AZ defined reference architecture and technology standards, and this includes the definition of such standards where there are capability gaps. The role will ensure that common architecture decisions are implemented consistently across the business and IT.

The role will provide Information Technology, business, data, application and domain specific architectural expertise and technical direction to projects. The Architect will work on architectures for business solutions and will specialise in at least one architecture domain, with the aligned domain for this role being the Manufacturing domain within the Operations

group.

The Associate Director Solution Architect will ensure that common architecture decisions support both business and IT strategy, and that architectures delivered are compliant with relevant AZ architecture standards, blueprints and roadmaps. The role will assess and review the work of other architecture roles and create a balance between the immediate and the strategic. A

Senior Solution Architect will understand implications of architecture requirements to ‘As-Is’ architectures and define/update ‘To-Be’ architectures applying AZ architecture guiding principles. As a Senior Solution Architect, the Role is focused on strategy and project portfolios spanning a 5 year horizon and a 0-18 month horizon respectively.

To be successful in this role the candidate needs to be an experienced person who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment as part of a global team. The ability to work and communicate with senior business stakeholders in order to understand their goals, capabilities needed, and requirements and to translate these into comprehensive solutions is

essential. A clear, logical style, an ability to document architecture and key design decisions is crucial, as is the ability to communicate effectively while working closely with business analysts and project managers in order to span across business, application, data and technology domains as required.

Associate Director Solution Architect for IGNITE: Operations IT (MAKE) Architecture

This role is accountable for the solution architecture and design across AstraZeneca’s Operations Manufacturing (MAKE) domain with a focus on Data & Analytics, Digital and IIOT capabilities. You will ideally be experienced in manufacturing technologies and be capable bridging the gap between IT and OT in a secure, future-looking manner.

You will be the responsible architect on projects within areas including but not limited to: Autonomous Factory, Digital Transformation and key strategic global programmes supporting manufacturing of our product portfolio. You will be required to analyse, conceptualise, design and govern across AstraZeneca’s strategic IT landscape to in order to support business projects.

  • Accountable for the architecture and design of comprehensive set of solutions that meet business requirements and are aligned to AstraZeneca’s Enterprise Architecture, providing subject matter expertise to ensure business opportunities are identified and realised in line with a standard and cost effective architecture.
  • Work with third party suppliers as required and contributes to the creation of functional design documents
  • Work with third party suppliers to verify technical development and delivery are in adherence with the Architecture Roadmap
  • Contribute to the development of the Architecture Capability by documenting and sharing knowledge and best practices with peer Architects
  • Accountable for the direction, performance and ongoing health of the current solution architectures within one or more given portfolios.
  • Define and manage the Architecture Principles for the given portfolio(s).
  • The role will guide and support other architects (including third party suppliers) in the development and documentation of IS/IT architectures for complex and business critical projects.
  • The role will be accountable for driving solution evaluation and selection decisions, buy vs. build decisions, and early-phase project estimates which contribute to the business case.
  • Lead the effort to ensure that common architecture decisions support the business and IS strategy, and that the architectures delivered are compliant with relevant AZ architecture standards, blueprints and roadmaps.
  • Participate in Architecture Assessments & Reviews either as Lead Reviewing Architect or as a Subject Matter Expert in the review team.
  • Contribute to the development of the Architecture Capability within AZ by documenting and sharing knowledge and best practices with peer Architects
  • Be accountable for the architecture and design of comprehensive solutions that meet business requirements and are aligned to AstraZeneca’s Enterprise Architecture,
  • Provide subject matter expertise to ensure business opportunities are identified and realised in line with a standard and cost effective solution architecture.
  • Guide and support other architects (including third party suppliers) in the development and documentation of IS/IT architectures for complex and business critical projects.
  • Be accountable for driving solution evaluation and selection decisions, buy vs. build decisions, early-phase project estimates, and proof of concepts which contribute to the business case.
  • Create estimates for solution delivery including expertise to validate third party estimates and hence ensure value for money
  • Deliver feedback to Enterprise Architects on how to improve Architecture Standards
  • Document best practices, drive reuse of existing solutions and in cooperation with other Architects promote new solutions for reuse.
  • Escalate (to Enterprise Architects) architecture design issues related to possible alternative solutions
  • Review Statement of Work responses from Suppliers.

Education, Qualifications, and Experience

Essential

Experience implementing and maintaining business solution architectures under any formal framework for

their domain of architecture

  • Manufacturing platforms and domain related technologies such as: MES, Historian, OEE solutions, IIoT, Edge technology, cloud, zero-trust, OT, Relational Databases and Big Data technologies, AI/ML, data streaming, data modelling, real-time inference
  • Demonstrable experience in IT/OT strategy development and execution, preferably in a senior role.
  • Good understanding of IT/OT architectures, systems, standards and technologies including ISA95, IEC62443, cloud computing, networking, cybersecurity, and industrial automation.
  • Proven consultancy experience designing end to end solutions that operate across all domains of IT.
  • Experience developing and leading innovative solutions
  • Proven experience of leading change and challenging approaches/ideas.
  • Proven ability to influence across business and IT.
  • Experience developing and managing relationships with third party suppliers
  • Experience with policies, procedures and guidelines within a quality, compliant, and secure environment
  • Experience with large scale solution Justification phase work – product evaluation, business case formulation
  • Experience directing cross functional teams.

Desirable

Demonstrated initiative, strong customer orientation, and cross-cultural working

  • People Development experience
  • Architecture certifications, e.g. TOGAF
  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry, IT trends and of competitor activity.
