Job Description

The Network Engineering team is part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) department that designs and operates network and telecom services and solutions to support the laboratory’s mission. This includes assisting researchers to provide IT infrastructure solutions at all NREL locations and collaboration with other National Laboratories on research projects, as well as NREL partners. As part of the networking team, this position will work closely with other ITS network engineers on a Clos data center network architecture and automation of datacenter network services. They will also assist with design and automation of research network services as necessary to provide self-service automation for researchers to utilize. 

The network engineering team has four areas of responsibilities including network engineering to support research, administrative, and data center needs; Telecommunications to support unified communications and collaboration services; infrastructure automation for campus, research and data center solutions, and a structured cabling team that designs and installs indoor and outdoor cabling infrastructure. 

  • Five or more years implementing enterprise networking solutions with complex LAN and data center environments 
  • Proficient configuring and troubleshooting switching technologies and protocols (VLANs, link aggregation, Spanning Tree, QoS, MLAG, etc.) 
  • Proficient configuring and troubleshooting routing technologies and protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, VRRP, VXLAN, EVPN, etc.) 
  • Experience using DevOps tools such as Ansible, Git, and Jenkins for network automation 
  • Hands on experience with Cisco routers and switches and IOS XE 
  • Understanding of IPv4 and IPv6 deployments and operations 
  • Experience troubleshooting LAN/WAN and application performance related issues 
  • Experience with network management tools such as Cisco Prime, SolarWinds, and NetQ 
  • Knowledge of optical Ethernet concepts (e.g., single-mode and multi-mode fiber and transceiver types) 
  • Ability to work participate in an on-call rotation, including overnight and weekends 
  • Self-starter with good time management skills 
  • Strong analytical and effective problem-solving sills 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands on experience with NVIDIA, Mellanox, Edgecore, and Cumulus Linux 
  • Hands on experience with Clos data center deployment and operations 
  • Experience with High Performance Computing data center networks 
  • Networking certification such as CCNP Enterprise, CCNP Data Center, or NVIDIA NCP-CML 
  • Experience deploying and troubleshooting IPv6 
  • Experience working in Linux or Unix operating systems 
  • Experience with various programming and scripting languages (e.g., python, perl, shell scripting, etc.)

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive IS expertise in specific field and has full knowledge of related disciplines. Evaluates new hardware, software, systems tools and applications and makes procurement recommendations. Excellent leadership and project management skills. Skilled in analytical techniques, practices and problem solving. Extensive programming and architecture abilities with various computer software programs and information systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: IT Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $90,600 - $163,100

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
