Failure Analysis Engineer

Job Description

The failure analysis engineer will use their hardware design, test and troubleshooting knowledge/experience to root cause HW failures and drive improvement action to mitigate failure mechanisms. The successful candidate will be in a hands-on role to own failure analysis on field returned hardware, manage failure records, enhance Fault testing and automation, drive supplier Failure Analysis and a partner in driving product quality improvement(s).

Responsibilities

  • Manage field hardware quality for Synopsys products: monitoring field quality data and associated metrics, including RMA Rates, MTBF and product reliability
  • Maintain SLA on FA and entry of FA information in RMA data base
  • Analyze RMA, Failure Analysis, and Repair data. Identify trends and raise quality excursions as required via collaboration with HW and SW engineering. Validate resolution plans.
  • Drive resolution, containment, and mitigation plans for such quality alerts.
  • Investigate/Troubleshoot/debug failure from System to PCBA/mechanical component level
  • Conduct component level troubleshooting including PCBA level debug and repair with supply chain partners.
  • Conduct field hardware quality meetings, presenting field quality performance to key stakeholders, including senior management within Manufacturing, Engineering, Product Marketing, and Customer Support teams.
  • Oversee operational performance of Failure Analysis contract manufacturer(s), ensuring partner(s) achieve key performance indicators, including FA SLA times, fault duplication rates, and fault isolation rates.
  • Collaborate with Hardware, Manufacturing, Quality, Test Engineers, Application Engineers and Field support teams in debug of specific field RMAs.
  • Work closely with the Product Quality and Manufacturing Test team to improve factory quality from field FA data.
  • Review and approve Failure Analysis results. Ensure status of RMA and Failure Analysis cases are updated in Synopsys customer relationship management system.
  • Maintain ECO matrix for RMA products and its implementation for repaired inventory
  • Maintain a design for reliability/service guide. Review upcoming designs for DFR/DFS requirements
  • Publish external-facing Failure Analysis Reports to Support/customer facing teams.
  • Document current process, simplify and deploy standardized processes at global suppliers.
  • Enhance/scale up FA testing and test automation to deploy to supplier test/repair sites.
  • Manage and conduct component level supplier FA as needed.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering with a minimum 2-4 years of experience in Failure Analysis
  • Previous experience in PCBA Design, and System Test a plus
  • Previous experience in Failure Analysis of EDA System a plus
  • Understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel, Salesforce, SAP and Jira
  • Understanding of soldering through-hole and SMT
  • Proficient in working and scripting in a Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of scripting with Python/PERL, Bash, shell
  • Knowledge of Java/My SQL database, report automation with MS BI/tableau/Sisense/crystal reports a plus
  • Knowledge of analytical tools as SEM/EDS, CSAM, other destructive/non-destructive tests 
  • Knowledge of schematics and understanding of circuit board layout
  • Working knowledge of test (off the shelf LINUX based tests) and test/measurement equipment, (oscilloscope), hands on troubleshooting and electronic debugging is required.
  • Working knowledge of Software troubleshooting (Linux environment) a strong plus
  • Detail oriented and efficient written and oral communication.
  • Basic Mechanical Engineering knowledge a plus
  • Able to lift and move 65lbs regularly.

The base salary range across the U.S. for this role is between $126,000-$190,000. In addition, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus, equity, and other discretionary bonuses.
