Academic Program Director - Local News and Accountability Reporting

John Jay College of Criminal Justice

POSITION DETAILS

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism. As the profession rapidly reinvents itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the tools to find stories and tell them effectively — using print, broadcast, visual, interactive, and social media. The school offers two master's degree programs: a Master of Arts in Journalism and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY seeks candidates for an Academic Program Director to serve as the head of the Local News and Accountability Reporting concentration (formerly the Urban Reporting concentration). The successful candidate will also serve as editor of the NYCity News Service, which supports and promotes student work by publishing original reporting and aggregated student work published elsewhere.

The ideal candidate is a journalist with a record of delivering outstanding coverage of local journalism. We’re seeking someone with energy and vision to use New York City as the training ground to teach emerging journalists to report on the intersection of people and power — and generate high-impact local news stories.

The incumbent will help shape the future of the newest iteration of our longstanding, successful program — along with the careers of the next generation of local news and political reporters determined to make a difference as they transform journalism and work to safeguard democracy.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the duties of the Academic Program Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the curriculum for the courses in the concentration; updating courses and adds new ones on an ongoing basis to ensure the curriculum reflect the latest trends in the industry and is geared toward serving the students and the public;
  • Recruits and supports a knowledgeable, diverse group of professors to teach courses; ensuring that students’ learning experience is of the highest quality;
  • Provides strong professional mentoring — including course and career advisement to students;
  • Participates in service related to the life of the school;
  • Works with the Admissions team and other J-School colleagues to promote the program with prospective and current students;
  • Maintains active ties to working professionals in support of guest speakers and seeks external and internal publishing opportunities for student work;
  • Conceives and hosts timely and high-profile public events in support of the concentration;
  • Develops contacts with employers to assist the Career Services office in identifying relevant internship and employment opportunities;
  • Maintains close contact with alumni from the concentration, and using these connections to enhance the student experience and career opportunities, as well as the profile and quality of the program;
  • Coordinates the School's various editorial brands, including the Mott Haven Herald and Hunts Point Express;
  • Develops editorial guidelines for publishing original student work, both individual pieces and group projects;
  • Establishes partnerships between the school and external outlets; works with colleagues to enhance the reach of the various outlets through the News Service;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Associate Dean.

There will be an opportunity to teach one to two related courses.

All full-time and part-time CUNY staff are expected to work in-person at their campus office 70% of their work time. For full-time staff, this is equivalent to 7 out of 10 days of in-person work in a two-week period (e.g., 7 days in-person, 3 days remote). Remote days must be pre-approved by the direct supervisor. This hybrid work schedule is subject to change
