Department Summary:

MITRE is seeking an experienced Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Management (ATM) subject matter expert (SME) with En Route and Traffic Flow Management (TFM) expertise to serve as an aviation systems engineer. This individual will assist in the development of ATM operational concepts, processes and automation for the FAA and our international customers. This is an ideal position for someone who is enthusiastic about working within a collaborative environment that is focused on solving the most difficult problems facing ATM globally.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate new TFM operational concepts or automation capabilities, identify operational needs and benefit areas, support operational integration activities.
  • Provide technical advice regarding traffic flow management and facility operations for developing, deploying, and implementing new capabilities towards the info-centric NAS vision. 
  • Support TBO/iTBO research and integration into NAS constraint management and efficiency improvement. 
  • Provide insights and propose solutions for modernizing training for controllers and traffic managers.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and participate in human-in-the-loop laboratory experiments, field observations, etc. 
  • Support engagement of key stakeholders, such as domestic and international service providers, flight operators, research organizations.

Basic Requirements:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Expertise in air traffic management operations, orders, processes, and procedures
  • Knowledge of existing and future FAA ATM and TFM decision support systems (e.g., TBFM, TFMS, FMDS, and ERAM)
  • Experience working at a broad range of FAA facilities including the Air Traffic Control System Command Center, En Route facilities, and FAA headquarters. We are particularly interested in Command Center experience.
  • Experience working at FAA facilities and collaborating directly with other FAA personnel and aviation stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (writing sample may be requested).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in serving regional/facility level STMC, TMO or ATCSCC NTMO, NOM.
  • Demonstrated experience working on special assignments such as an operations team or CDM team.
