Senior Architectural Designer

At Stony Brook Medicine the Senior Architectural Designer shall provide architectural design of new facilities and renovations/alteration to existing SBUH facilities. Services include identification, verification of existing visible building conditions, design solution and preparation of construction documents. Project program requirements will be gathered by the incumbent or be conveyed through the department director. When working with external design consultants, services include participation in planning, review of design, final construction documents and inspection of completed construction work to ensure the work meets the intended design and building code requirements. 

Duties of a Senior Architectural Designer may include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Shall be able to prepare design and construction documents which include but are not limited to floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, interior / exterior elevations, millwork details, finish specifications and door / hardware schedules. 
  • Will be required to coordinate with in-house electrical and mechanical design disciplines with necessary information to compile a complete and accurate set of construction drawings.
  • On projects requiring the services of an outside architectural / engineering consultant or firm, will work with the Procurement Department to obtain professional services through RFP / RFQ process. Subsequently, will assist with the respective contracts and project coordination.
  • Work closely with Fire Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Physical Plant, SBUH Facilities, end users, and outside consultants / contractors where necessary.
  • Consult with Hospital Administration, Hospital Facilities Planning, physicians and clinical staff to assist in strategic planning for new construction or renovations of hospital services that will improve the quality and efficiency of patient care services. 
  • Will analyze and assess corrective measures from written and drawn documentation and/or from on-site observations.
  • Work with construction Estimator to develop estimates, scope of work and performs project related Value Engineering exercises where and when indicated.
  • Manage and oversee all phases of architectural design. Development and preparation of preliminary and construction drawings, including but not limited to, drawings, specifications, and addenda, in accordance with regulatory and applicable health care guidelines.
  • Coordinate or implement revision and adaption of designs to meet clinical and regulatory code compliance needs. Reviews drawings with the code compliance office and fire safety manger to ensure design compliance with all applicable codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Coordinate with the Hospital Architectural staff including, but not limited to Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical designers, drafts persons, and other support staff.
  • Coordinate activities of outside design and engineering consultants related to their design work.
  • Assist in the selection and supervision of engineering, architectural consultants, vendors and contractors in matters related to new construction or renovations to hospital facilities. 
  • Serve as a liaison between the hospital and contractors / consultants to ensure compliance, on the parts of contractors/consultants, with the standards of quality, function and contractual terms.
  • May be required to survey hospital environments to ensure that the projects are in compliance with hospital regulations, Department of Health codes, TJC requirements, ASHE guidelines, for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities. These reviews will always be coordinated with the in-house code compliance department and/or fire marshal and periodically infection control representatives when required.
  • May be required to make contacts with outside organizations such as government agencies, professional organizations and other institutions to aid and foster the planning activities.
  • Required to prepare Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and Interim Life Safety Measure (ILSM) construction documents required in association with Certificate of Need (CON) submissions.
  • Required to prepare the appropriate documents necessary for the submission of a CON. These documents shall be coordinated with in-house Code Compliance Officials and with Hospital Strategic Planning.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Drafting and Design, Architecture or Engineering and 7 years' experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems.
  • In lieu of Bachelor's, an Associate's Degree in Drafting and Design, Architecture or Engineering and 9 years’ experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems.
  • Advanced skill & knowledge of AutoCAD 2020 - release 2010 or higher.
  • Minimum of 7 years of healthcare related experience which should include participation/ involvement with physicians, clinical and administrative staff in the planning; design and building heath care spaces while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate preparation/revision of construction documents; coordination and supervision of consultants / contractors.
  • Candidate shall be familiar with HVAC systems and have the ability to map out existing Supply/Return ductwork, control boxes and possess the ability to take Supply / Return air flow base line readings.
  • Candidate shall possess a fundamental understanding of AIA Guidelines for Facilities Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities (FGI, 2020 Edition) and the New York State Building code (2018 Edition) and NFPA 101 (2012 edition).

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Project mates documentation system, ATG database management system and Certificate of Need (CON) documentation.
  • Experience of estimating new construction/renovation projects in a health care setting.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The anticipated salary range for this position has been established as $80,000 - $95,000 / year.

The above salary represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all UUP positions have an additional ($3,087) for Location Stipend annually,
