Salary range: $82,000 - $87,000 annually

Position Description:

The Senior Manager of Individual Giving will play a critical role in leading our fundraising efforts focused on individual donors, building on strong relationships with existing donors, and identifying and cultivating new donors. Your strategic vision and expertise in fundraising will help us achieve our mission and drive meaningful impact for the homeless and at-risk families we serve.

This is a new role. While Compass has deep and long-term support from individual donors, we have not had a staff member dedicated to individuals in the past and we believe there is great potential to grow support and connection with donors at this time. This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced fundraiser and strategic thinker to support Compass in achieving a new level of fundraising success.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Fundraising Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive individual giving fundraising strategy aligned with Compass’ mission and objectives. Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and CEO to set ambitious fundraising goals and implement strategies to achieve them.
  • Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: Both directly and through coordination with organizational leaders, build and maintain strong relationships with existing individual donors, major donors, and prospective donors. Strategize with leaders around donor engagement through personalized communications, meetings, and events to deepen their connection with the organization and its programs.
  • Major Gifts Program: Lead and manage the major gifts program, focusing on securing significant contributions from high-net-worth individuals and major donors. Create tailored approaches for cultivation and solicitation, ensuring a personalized donor experience. Help assign and manage donor portfolios for the CEO and CDO.
  • Donor Research: Conduct thorough research to identify new prospects for individual giving. Utilize data analytics and industry trends to identify potential high-value donors and devise strategies to approach them effectively.
  • Events: Directly supervise the Events Manager and oversee donor events, including our annual benefit event, Compass Family Day (our family service-learning event), donor house parties, and more. Collaborate with the Events Manager to ensure seamless execution and a positive donor experience, and evaluate our current mix of events, proposing any appropriate changes in order to maximize revenue generation and donor connection.
  • Annual Fund: Directly manage our largest giving campaign of the year: The Annual Fund. In coordination with the Chief Development Officer and the Board Development Committee, develop a compelling solicitation letter. With support from the Development and Communications Associate, coordinate a clean and robust mailing list and execute the mailing according to the established timeline. Work with the full development team and especially the Communications Manager to implement a robust communications strategy including mass email and social media.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Work closely with the Development team, collaborating on cross-functional projects and sharing best practices.
  • Board Partnership: Work with Board members and other key stakeholders on the execution of Annual Fund, events, and other strategic activities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in individual giving and fundraising. Proactively identify areas for improvement and implement innovative strategies to enhance fundraising efforts. Help conceptualize and implement a planned giving strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on individual giving and major gifts.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing fundraising strategies that achieve measurable results.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and inspire trust among donors and team members.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to lead and motivate staff effectively.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising software and CRM systems to track donor interactions and fundraising progress.
  • Adept at conducting prospect research and utilizing data-driven insights for decision-making.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Commitment to, and passion for, the well-being of children and families.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $82,000-$87,000 annually.
  • Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.
  • This is an exempt (salaried) position.

Location and Covid safety:

  • Office location: 37 Grove St., less than a block from Civic Center BART/MUNI station
  • This is primarily an on-site role, with the option to work remotely one day per week after the first three months
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff, including booster
