Center for Health Equity and Precision Public Health (CHEPPH) in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks two tenure-track faculty members (open rank) to help achieve its goal of utilizing inclusive approaches to reduce disparities, promote health equity, and create a diverse workforce population where every person has the opportunity to “attain his or her full health potential”. Candidates should address contemporary problems in Human Diseases through genetic, genomics, or public health research addressing health equity and social determinants of health. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, big data approaches to understand racial/ethnic differences in the etiology, biology, prevention, treatment or control of cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, cancer, or diabetes, or racial/ethnic differences in disparities-related behaviors, statistical genetics, genomics, systems genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, translational genomics, and precision medicine.

The tenure-track faculty member will be joint appointed in the CHEPPH and will:

  • Develop an active, extramurally research program in public health, health equity, and/or genomics, utilizing data science approaches.
  • Demonstrate a track record of productivity and peer reviewed basic, translational, or biomedical research.
  • Work with the CHEPPH leadership to develop and grow the Center’s health equity research, educational and training pipelines, and community outreach and engagement initiatives.
  • Train students in genomics, public health, and health equity research.
  • Contribute to the CPHG, PHS, or relevant department teaching mission.

Anticipated effort: Research 80%, teaching 10%, service 10%

Candidates should have an expressed interest in addressing health disparities and achieving health equity through efforts that include Research, Community Outreach and Engagement, and Education and Training Pipelines. Ideally one position will have a genomics and bioinformatics focus while the second will focus on social determinants of health, public health, and health equity approaches. The goal of the CHEPPH is to become a national leader in precision public health, rural health, and health equity research and training.

Candidates will be resident faculty in CHEPPH, with join appointments in the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) or other relevant department, with affiliate membership in the Center for Public Health Genomics (CPHG). The Department of Public Health Sciences provides leadership and excellence in innovative research, education, and community engagement strategies to advance clinical care, patient outcomes, and population health. With more than 50 primary-appointed faculty, PHS plays a unique role in leading and fostering collaborative research and education across the School of Medicine, the University of Virginia, and the community at large. PHS faculty have a wide range of expertise, from biostatistics, epidemiology and informatics to economics, systems engineering, public health, evaluation, and health policy. PHS faculty lead and/or collaborate on clinical and population health research topics ranging from clinical trials, clinical outcomes, comparative effectiveness, clinical quality, health services, prevention, health policy, and health equity research.

The CPHG was established in January 2007 and is currently home to 15 resident faculty and over 50 affiliated faculty. The CPHG is an area of excellence in human genetics and genomics research at the University of Virginia. Our core mission is focused on advancing personalized medicine through the use of genetic and genomic discovery to inform the prediction, prevention, and treatment of disease. CPHG labs use cutting-edge computational and experimental approaches to investigate the basis of a wide-range of disease areas including, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, osteoporosis, and cancer. Critical to the mission of the CPHG is training the next generation of genome scientists by providing state-of-the-art research, translational, and teaching experiences.
