About the role

The decarbonisation of the steel industry between now and 2050 is likely to change the iron ore supply chain as we know it. The next 20 years will see the largest and fastest change in iron and steelmaking technology the industry has seen in decades. Positioning Rio Tinto as sustainability leaders is key in realising our ambitions, strategy and growth agenda. The Steel Decarbonisation team is at the forefront of this and will shape pathways for Rio Tinto’s iron ores in a decarbonised iron and steelmaking future.

We are looking for the BioIronTM Project Lead to head the BioIron team to create a pathway to generate both social and commercial benefit from this breakthrough technology Rio Tinto has developed, and ensure the following are achieved:

  • Lead the BioIronTM team to create a pathway to generate both societal and commercial benefit from this breakthrough technology Rio Tinto has developed
  • Define the Biomass Ironmaking project ambitions and priorities, identifying a clear pathway to develop the technology to commercial scale and contemporaneously achieve market understanding and interest in the technology
  • Manage & lead engagement with customers, technology providers, universities, industry associations and other partners to capture new opportunities to accelerate the time to market for the technology
  • Lead negotiations with all partners for delivery of R&D, engineering services, supply analysis and supporting services ensuring Rio Tinto’s IP is protected
  • Lead the engagement with global Civil Society Organisations in conjunction with the Rio Tinto Civil Society Engagement and Risk Communications teams to develop widespread understanding of the sustainability credentials of the BioIronTM technology
  • Work with the Rio Tinto State Agreements and Approvals team in conjunction with the WA Government Relations team to support management of RTIO’s Secondary Processing Obligations
  • Engage with key external stakeholders to harvest new ideas and opportunities to support the development of the BioIronTM technology
  • Work with both the internal and external communications team on messaging and telling a compelling story around the Biomass Ironmaking technology and its contribution to net zero / Rio Tinto sustainability agenda
  • Work closely with key internal stakeholders including RTIO Strategy, Head of Bulks Marketing & ESG, Iron Ore Technical Marketing team, Office of the Chief Scientist, Rio Tinto Energy and Climate Change CoE, Head of Market Analysis, Head of Metals & Minerals Marketing & ESG, and Rio Tinto Energy Development to align understanding of the opportunities the Biomass Ironmaking technology presents for Rio Tinto
  • Leverage the stage gate process to secure funding of the project and prioritise / allocate resources, ensuring alignment with Rio Tinto Scope 3 objectives and steel decarbonisation strategy

This role will engage with a number of internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver the opportunity the BioIronTM technology presents.

Reporting to the GM – Steel Decarbonisation Pacific, you will:

  • Need to be credible in the market, Rio Tinto, the team and with customers
  • Lead, manage and motivate the BioIronTM team, and the key stakeholders
  • Ensure there is effective and timely communications
  • Be responsible for the content of the BioIronTM presentations both internally and externally
  • Ensure all aspects of the project planning, coordination and resources are available for the project to move from one phase to the next and when external resources are required
  • Ensure there is a clear pathway, with objectives, milestones and timelines
  • Be an advocate of the Steel Decarbonisation team; in behaviours and leadership
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to articulate a compelling Biomass Ironmaking Project strategy and overview of all associated workplans / initiatives
  • Manage the Biomass Ironmaking Project communications internally and externally

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A strong knowledge in the iron ore and steel industry
  • Strong interpersonal skills, in conjunction with good presentation abilities
  • Assertive and results driven: bias to action; a driver
  • Able to influence team and work with senior stakeholders
  • Strong communication and influencing skills to gain commitment from your team, customers, and key stakeholders to successfully deliver on your goals
  • Tertiary education;
  • At least 10 years of industry experience,
  • Flexible in working hours given the global stakeholders in the BioIronTM Project
